Transfer fees

Have premier league teams been a little guilty of a lack of foresight. They all knew this money was coming. Shouldn't quite a few deal have been set up over the last 12 months. You wouldn't have had a £15m bid for Deeney turned down last season. Now Twice that is being rejected.

Seems all of a sudden it's gone batshit. Agreements could and should have been made before we see all these mad bids going in. Add the Chinese market in as well.

I havve always said in the John Stones thread that the club is seemingly looking at a structured deal. I think you might want to read what I've posted in the other thread. Thse were in response to buying £50m upfront. My justification behind it is that we are not buying a player with a good defensive record but has the potential.

What is shrewd? Pep says get me Stones so Everton say he will cost £50m do we say well some of our fans only think he is worth £20m so that is what we will offer. Everton say we couldnt give a f**k we want £50m. What do City do tell Pep he aint coming or do they pay the money?

If reports are true that he has handed in a transfer request last year and wanted to sign for us, it gives us some leverage in the bargain. That is a kind of shrewd.

He put in a transfer request last year because he wanted to go to Chelsea and Everton said NO so that didnt work out so good for Stones in the end.

The point is these days the power is with the selling club they can ask what they want and its up to the buying club to work out how much they want that player. Of course they can haggle as much as they like but for top homegrown English talent there is a premium and you have two choices either pay what the selling club want or walk away. Us bitching about value etc is pointless

Quite right. 'Value' and 'worth' are entirely in the eyes of the beholder. A Bugatti Veyron can cost over £3M. Is it worth that? Who knows. A Picasso (Les Femmes d'Alger) sold for $179M and is the seventh most expensive painting sold, so far. Has anyone ever seen it? No you haven't as its locked away in a private collection. You don't see articles in newspapers saying it's not worth that and the buyer could have done much better with his money!
What people need to understand is the price of something is, no more or less, what someone is willing to pay for it. If a player is bought for £40/50M it's not his fault if he doesn't look like a £40/50M player (whatever one of them looks like), as the selling/buying price is completely out of his control.

My opinion is all these players are a snip this year it will double within 1 year.
Pay the money do the deals and get the players in.
 
Price DOES matter to a fair degree. Why?

First, money may be plentiful but it's not limitless. We have a budget and, if we overspend in one area, we may restrict options in another. FFP may be much less a constraint than before but still acts as a backstop.

Second, we are a business and no businessman worth his salt likes to have the piss ripped.

Third, a player's price tag fuels expectations and weighs heavily if his delivery falls short. Look no further than Sterling. Would he have got half as much shite if we'd paid his true market value? Would he fcukaslike. Incidentally, some of that shite comes from Blues as well as press hacks and dipper fodder.

Fourth, a scattergun buy 'em up approach and/or snapping up other people's youngsters fuels the "moneybags City" jibe. Don't tell me that doesn't bother folk because a million posts on here say otherwise.

Fifth, silly prices further enrich parasite agents who earn millions for doing virtually fcuk all. Another facet of the rip-off.

Finally, this "pay any price" mentality underlines the end of Citeh and our transmogrification into the rags and Real Madrids of this world.

I agree but the fact remains that these are the prices. No premiership clubs needs to sell any more.

It would't hurt for us to start spotting a few more bargains and making a few less outrageous gambles like Mangala and Otty.
 
Higuain 95m Euros - This just proves the market has gone crazy and why realistically we will have to pay the man for our targets. If this year is bad price wise imagine next year when all the Premier league clubs have a second year of the new tv money. Do the deals this summer for the established players we need now and then rely on the young players we are buying, and the academy lads that are coming through, for the future. Let's not miss the boat like we did a few years ago and make sure we give Pep the players he needs to establish the next great dynasty in English football.
 
I'm surprised people complain about how much we spend on individual players..... not one **** piped up when we paid £5M for Jon Macken.... Should still be on crimewatch that deal!
 
For all the relevance that transfer fees have to the average fan we may as well quote them in Matabele Gumbo Beads or Star Wars Galactic Credits, it's not money as we know it.
 
Transfer fees are merely there to beat other fans of other clubs with. I'll be using it to bash united fans from here to the moon with, but they won't care. They bashed us for our spending, but I didn't care. I'll bash the only Chelsea fan I know if they spend £75m on Lukaku and I'm sure I'll get the piss taken out of me if we spend £50m on Stones. Nobody cares though at the end of the day, it has become that nonsensical that the figures are just nothing more than bait for rival fans to use. The real money being exchanged May aswell be Monopoly money, it's that insignificant.

I can give it out, so I'll take it too. That's football rivalry.
 
Wouldn't anyone agree the biggest part of a players fee is decided when he is being sold by, or end his career with the club that signed him?
I mean if we pay 50mill for Stones we clearly overpay based on where he stands in today's market. If he flops and leave as in Savic or Nastasic it's absolutely money thrown away. As when he stays for 8plus years and becomes a Terry like figure he will represent a bargain.
