The Wirtz transfer saga is an interesting one - because as of now we really don't know happened and why were his parents in Manchester.
This intrigued me to discuss some of such transfers and why they didn't happen. Something you have read somewhere 5 years after the incident or some ITK stuff that never came out.
For example -

Sanchez - Was it really that the rags came and doubled his salary or it was something else. He was almost ready to join City
Dani Alves- He went to a wedding with Messi and he told him to come to PSG
Ronaldo - Did Ferguson really called CR7 in the middle of the flight and he went to Old Trafford instead
Jorginho - Sarri and his agent dupped us as he said yes to us and then both moved to Chelsea from Napoli
Messi- Was Messi really coming to City and then something changed and we went for Grealish

Cristiano Ronaldo? This is the first I've ever heard of this.

There's the famous ones like Luis Figo and Geoff Thomas (same level, obviously!) but plenty more that have been very close and we have either pulled out or the player did.

I believe we were very close to getting Anders Limpar at one point, but he chose Everton and we did a quick deal with them for Beagrie, whom Limpar was intended to replace at Goodison.

Similar with Dickov. We wanted Ian Wright but him going to Arsenal created an opportunity to get Paul Dickov, who would then fall down the Highbury pecking order.

I also heard we were offered Gareth Bale when his Spurs career was faltering, but didn't fancy him as a left back.

Another left back, Mikel Silvestre, was keen to stay in the north west and was lined up for City, but I think the club thought better of the deal and let him leave united for, Sunderland was it? As with O Shea recently, was there if we wanted it.

Berbatov and Van Persie, like Sanchez, chose United and and now just a footnote in premier league history.

Seem to remember us being told deals were done with Begovic and Mignolet as keepers in the past too, I think in one case we opted for Pantillimon instead. Schwarzer famously chose Middlesbrough and claimed they were a bigger club, shame for everyone really.

Mido and Steed Malbranque for the older deadline day heads. Or that Kenyan midfielder who the tribunal refused a work permit, think he went Inter instead
Loads we seemed to be permanently linked with, from Jeremy Goss and Paul Wilkinson to the king of them all, Isco

I was going to say Steed!!

McDonald Mariga is the midfielder you are thinking of, Wanyama’s younger brother. Haven’t heard that name I years.

Another work permit we got stung on late but then went to Celtic was Nir Bitton.

Bloody work permits! Albeit saved us from 2 horrible signings there!!

Sanchez and Maguire - both bullets dodged.

Hazard, Jorginho - would have been great at the time.

Ugo ehiogu.

Royle bid a couple of times for him and would have broke our transfer record but boro rejected the bids.
He might have kept us up.

Did I imagine it or did we have mark schwartz ready to announce at one point and then he got another offer at the last minute?

Mark Schwarzer played a reserve match for us in around 1996 and we wanted to sign him but somehow we made a mess of it and he signed for Bradford instead.

Malbranque rejected us because we were too far from London and then signed for Sunderland not too long after!
