Transgender People at Work

Never forget the one who went from male to female at a place I used to work at years ago.
I would've liked to have seen my own face as "she" walked into our office.
Having Gok Wan as her friend may have helped a little.

See, this is what worries me. I'm normally good at keeping a straight face. But I've all kinds of terrible imaginings when I first run into my colleague.

Just had an email from work informing us that one of our colleagues has been formally granted transgender status by the authorities. New name, new gender, everything as of next week.

This is completely out of the blue and while totally cool has wrong-footed me a bit in terms of etiquette. Do I buy a card? Act like nothing's happened?

I've agreed with my team that total solidarity and support for our friend is the way to go at work. But we've been working with this person for a long time and the reality is that it'll take a bit of getting used to.

Any advice welcome folks.

Not Lorretta is it??

Nope, though I have met her.

It's awkward, I kept calling her mate. What made it worse was that she looked like rooney in a frock.

Did she look like rooney when not in a frock ??

The lady at our place walked in dressed like Mrs Bouquet, seriously. Big long flowery frocks like your nan would wear and she was in her thirties. I'm not saying I'd make a pretty lady myself but I think I'd be taking some fashion advice before venturing out.
