i saw colin bell from the day he arrived, to his last game.
but i wouldnt dream of trying to pick one of these 2 fantastic players to be any less than the other
Colin Bell was crap on crosses and just didn't dominate the goal area and Bert was like crab and rarely left his own 18 yard box!
Joking aside - different eras, different positions... I guess Bert edges it on having the most fantastic life story, in addition to being world class in his day (almost mythical as well as legendary). Colin was a very special footballer and part of our most famous side, but not charismatic. By all accounts a very modest and shy man.
They are both part of our club's rich history and maybe trying to separate them is actually missing the point!
I do however find that people who are like late 40's and 50+ years old get a bit overly moist about the Mercer-Alison years team and that older teams from our history are not considered when talking about best ever! I say this because my Dads Dad (never met him, he was born in like 1912 and died in the 70's before I was even born!) used to tell my Dad that the best City players were the striking partnership of Eric Brook and Tommy Johnson, or the title winning stars of keeper Frank Swift and in my old grandads eyes City's greatest ever captain Peter Doherty (the first City player to lift the league title!); and he did see Bell Lee Doyle Young Summerbee etc to judge from also!
And going back even further, what about Billy Meredith? (no, I'm not old enough!)
He played in the first City side to win the FA Cup, was forced to join *n*t*d after the payments scandal, but came back to City and played until he was 51.
I have read that he should be considered as football's first superstar.
