Trevor Francis

I thought he was head and shoulders better than anyone one else in the team at that time. He was lightning fast, so fast that the rest of the team weren’t on the same wave length. If memory serves me right he played 24 games but during his time at the club he had a few injuries which prevented him from playing.

I wasn’t too bothered when he left because he was that good and fast at that time he just didn’t really fit in with the rest of the team. He really needed to be playing in a better team that suited his pace and style.
He was head and shoulders better than anyone in the country at the time, struggled badly with injuries otherwise would probably have doubled the caps he earned

One of the best players to pull on the blue shirt. Pity he didnt stay for long.

Bloody good player. Top player at the time but only here one season as we couldn't really afford to buy the top player anymore after the Swales/Allison disaster. Sold to meet the bills. Sad.

Another Trev fact. He has a soft spot for us fans can't stand the club.

Feels he was conned when he signed, didn't meet any of the promises we made him, didn't even pay his wages for months on end, when we sold him he was still owed a stack of back pay that he had to threaten legal action to get settled. I got this directly from him oddly enough, met him in a bar in America back in the day and spent a couple of hours with him.

This dislike still comes across when he is doing the commentary on a City game, always very negative, takes joy in our conceding goals, never agrees with a decision in our favour, comes across as small minded really.

Shame.

Shame to read that. He was a great player, great technique and so quick. I remember being at Stoke behind the goal when he scored two on his début and his last minute winner at home to Wolves to put us top of the 1st Division for about 2 days!! One of the best to ever put on the Blue shirt but rarely mentioned because it was such a short stay.

A thoroughbred but was in a class of his own with us. Looked too good for us as someone else said after Allison had sold off the crown jewels. Injury prone but still top scorer. Sold on to recoup the outlay and typical City we buy an end of career David Cross instead who to be fair scored as many but was not nearly as exciting.

Trevor Francis's departure marked the end of an era in some ways as we wouldn't be buying from the top table again for quite a few years being relegated after 17 years in the top flight and beginning the start of the next 17 yo-yo years which eventually culminated in our return to the top flight via the embarassing depths of the old third division. Cue George Weah, another great success ;-)

The bloke was a complete twat when it came to Management !!
Whilst in charge at QPR he fined one of the Players for being at the birth of his first child !!
This caused anger in the dressing room and he only lasted 12 months if that, but his man management skills were shit, hence his move into TV as a pundit.
Cannot knock him as a Player and I was fortunate to be at Stoke the day he scored twice.

one of my all time fave city players,i got a trevor francis world cup football annual 1983 from ebay a few mth ago, some top pics in it,was only a few quid.

-- Fri Jul 23, 2010 10:05 am --

i rember my dad saying he was sold so we could have the new main stand roof done, any truth in that?

I grew up across the road from Maine Road and one of my earliest memories, must have only been about six.

He stood at the top of the steps with John Bond holding his arms aloft and must have been a couple of thousand blues going mental?

I used to have a Trevor Francis orange flyaway football, even then, I knew he must have been someone special.

Cried my eyes out one windy day when I was kicking it down Lloyd Street South and the wind blew it across the road and watched it roll for what seemed like miles.

All I can really remember of him in terms of playing for City.

I think I recall him headbutting someone at Maine Road and getting sent-off, my dad going mental.

The other time, again, my memory as an young kid might not be right. It was around Christmas time, we were playing Wolves and my dad and me started to walk to the back of the Main Stand with about a minute to go.

We turned to see the ball dropping in from outside the area and the place just went mental.

I was only a nipper but everyone was hugging me and my old man telling us it was a wonder goal from Francis. We went top that day?

It is sketchy memories like these which made me a blue.
