Trident

If Trident was used, the most likely scenario is it would come down the submarine commander at the time.
There are specific instructions locked away in each sub on what the course of action is to be - as the chances are, London wouldn't actually exist anymore, and there's no telling what state comms would be in. Quite how the commander is determine that London is no more - I don't know.

There are some underwater communications plus the more obvious radio / sat, and maybe some other technologies, but logically, in order for the sub to know that London is gone, it must either a) be specifically told so, or b) assume so due to a lack of communication. How long the commander would wait after communications failed, I don't know, and how he'd know which nation attacked us, I don't know (unless he's getting downlink information from some tracking satellite.

It's supposed to be silence on Radio 4 for a set number of days.
There are also supposed to be instructions on each sub, written by the Prome Minister. When we get a new PM each sub recieves new instructions. So if you're a smart Johnny Foreigner looking to bomb the UK you assassoinate the PM. The singel sub that is at sea then needs to get new instructions some how. You pin point the hand over from Postman Pat and launch.

The vast majority of the other major nations in the world - Canada, Australia, Mexico, Malaysia, Indonesia, Spain, Italy, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Japan to name but a few - don't have nuclear weapons.

Taiwan, which has been under constant threat by China for nearly 70 years doesn't have nuclear weapons yet hasn't been invaded.
Most of them come under the nuclear umbrella therefore have no need to acquire nuclear weapons.

Could we make it silence on talksport for a set number of days?...that would work.

I read the other day that the new PM writes instructions in a sealed envelope for each of the four subs which is kept under lock and key. The 4 options she was given should London/UK be wiped out were;

1. To retaliate.

2. To do nothing.

3. To place the submarine under the control of an ally - specifically the United States Navy or Royal Australian Navy.

4. To act according to how the Captain deems best.

Well, at that point it isn't a deterrent any more. You don't know if your family is still alive, but if you fire your missiles (at missile silos still with missiles in) then whichever enemy it is will just fire them back at your country (use them or lose them), so if your family has survived you'd be responsible for increasing the threat to them. I think the historic phrase is "self-deterrence" *.

As for "independence" - http://www.politico.eu/article/uk-trident-nuclear-program/ And that's without American anti-missile systems that could shoot down our Trident missiles as soon as they were fired. And without the underwater drone technology that means they may not be able to "hide" much longer.

* Now here's a brilliant article from when the Americans were putting Cruise missiles in Britain. Because mutual assured destruction was tactically MAD, and immoral (they quote the Just War doctrine), we needed both superiority in strategic nuclear weapons (ICBMs), and smaller nuclear weapons that could be used - because otherwise deterrence is not credible "because of the self-deterrence inherent in such a strategic context". So we had to have a credible scenario in which the USSR believed we would use nuclear weapons, and could "win" a nuclear war - by which they meant as few as 20 million dead Americans. http://home.earthlink.net/~platter/articles/80-summer-payne.html

So in that context:

The Russians actually intend to use Nukes tactically in their current battle plans.
No they don't - that's only a stance for deterrence purposes....

I'm just astonished that the Parliamentary debate (as reported) was so light on morality. It seems Trident is at heart a job-creation scheme (and cost per job is phenomenal). It seems remarkable that Field Marshall Lord Carver, former Chief of the Defence Staff, asked in 1998 "Trident - what the bloody hell is it for ?" and yet support for a dated concept of deterrence has actually got more popular.
