Are you sure? Mkv files are generally HD (or pretty close to it). I am pretty sure the smallest you are coming across are FLV (which are flash files). Android devices may struggle with these.
if size is a worry but you want a semi decent quality go for avi files in my humble opinion they get the size to quality ratio about right, but if the source is shit the output will be worse
