Probably been mentioned but worth watching IMHO are Dexter, Walking dead, Homeland, Sopranos and Sons of Anarchy. I also like a cheesy American series called Supernatural but everyone I've ever recommended it to usually say its gash :(

I have scoured all series and these are the ones you have to watch.

prison break
entourage
breaking bad
game of thrones

There are 6 there and they are the best i've come across although there is boardwalk empire and 24(you'll need more then 2 weeks) those you will not be disappointed with.

If it's not been mentioned and you haven't already see them? then Life on Mars series 1 and 2, followed on by the spinoff Ashes to Ashes is some of the best TV I've ever seen. But you must follow them in order really to get the full extent of how good it actually is.
