TV Series

Better Call Saul, only 3 more to go before I finish the series. I was dodging it because I really wasn't that keen on Breaking Bad, but I quite like it.
Sense8, couple of eps in and its pretty damn good.

Hannibal cancelled by NBC.

Absolutely gutted, best show on TV and completely different to anything out there.

Hopefully it gets picked up by another network who allow them the same freedom.

Gutted at this news, apparently ratings have dropped off this series and with the extreme imagery the show has, they have had some criticism. From Fuller's comments he's keen to move on and carry on working with NBC, so the show is over.

Wayward Pines is a bit silly but there's enough good acting and intrigue (and Shannyn Sossamon never hurts) to make it mildly addictive. Melissa Leo is definitely the star turn as Nurse Pam a menacing, passive-agressive, Ratched-like presence with an apparently unsettling degree of influence over the townsfolk.

The first episode of True Detective II was certainly visually striking, (despite them dispensing with Cory Fukunaga's mesmerising directorial skills for season 2) and has a bit of a modern noirish vibe, with nods to David Lynch and Raymond Chandler but it lacks that evocative, baleful bayou, ghostly gothic atmosphere that the unique Louisiana setting inpired in season one.
Despite a few decent lines (a presumably prescient 'I welcome judgement' from Ray was my highlight) the writing and the plot are rather hackneyed and chaotic, with too many strands thrown together one after another for my liking, while I thought the old veinous LA freeway imagery as a metaphor for separation, solitude and obliviousness was rammed throught the retina to the point of anathema already one hour in.
Characterwise the lead trio appear to comprise of most every Cop cliche in the book and the acting doesn't always convince, though I look forward to seeing more Kelly Reilly (the acceptable face of daywalkers !) as the influential girl behind Vincis big cheese Vince Vaughan.
In all fairness it is early days and I will be sticking with it and expecting the plot to evolve and the actors to grow into their parts (hopefully) as the story progresses ... don't see it coming close to series 1, which was always a tall order but still anticipating a good show.

Hmmm reading them ramblings back, sorry if that was a tad verbose ... Pretensious **** moi ?!

Watched it last night and you make some good points, for me it's always going to be difficult to follow series one, but I have high hopes for series 2 , let's hope it doesn't dissapoint.

Agreed. Having just watched S1 through again, it's even better, some amazing acting and writing, so yes, S2 was always going to be up against it. They had a lot of introducing to do with there being 4 main characters, so Ep1 was only ever going to be meh.

I think it will be near impossible to follow series 1 of True Detective...purely for the fact of it's setting on the Bayou...the whole feel of the story is more menacing...couple that with Mcconaughey and Harrelson and the second series is always going to be struggling...

That and the Handsome Family Far From Any Road theme tune is one of the best of any series ever.

Interesting and maybe a bit disappointing. In saying that, I didn't really 'get' Season One until around the 4th episode (the Hells Angels kidnap) then I absolutely loved it. Didn't quite buy McConaughey's monologue pieces initially, but again, it eventually won me over. Sorely miss it now.

Missed a lot of this thread but some of my favourites are the French cop shows 'Braquo' and 'Spiral' - both pretty gritty/earthy.
Anyone seen the original (Swedish) Humans (real Humans). Not quite sure about the UK version...

Girls?! ;)

You heathen!!! Try and give it another go Kazza. True detectives was brilliant, Woody Harrelson and Matthew MCConaughey were superb, well written and directed, the second series has an almost impossible task of keeping up the standard. I am going to wait a few episodes before judging the new series.
