TV Series

I've not seen it yet but it's written by Taylor Sheridan, who wrote Sicario, Wind River and Hell or High Water which were all IMO very good and critically acclaimed, so it'd be a shame and a bit of a surprise if 1883 is shit.
I didn’t think it was shit, I enjoyed it. Haven’t watched Yellowstone yet so not sure if it helps to have done so but wouldn’t have thought so with it being a prequel.
Long stopped telling people what they should or shouldn’t like anymore when it comes to entertainment as it’s personal choice, though I tend to go the opposite of whatever @Bill Walker thinks is great… :-)

1883

I like a good Western, but this is slow and dreary. Acting is a bit shit as well.
Agree Bill. I watched a few episodes of 1883 - looks like a fun diversion - but not awesome.

Have you watched the movie, "News of the World"? It's set in roughly the same timeframe, and is, IMO, really, really good.

Tom Hanks plays the protagonist who encounters a scene of recent Indian massacre while traveling alone on horseback. Nearby he finds an orphaned young blonde-haired girl who is unable to speak English - apparently having been raised by native American Indians. The protagonist takes her in and eventually sets out to return her to her next of kin.

Great film - best by far that I've watched recently.

Really, you didn't like Flight or any Tarantino or Coen Brothers movies,
The Revenant, Godfather, In Bruges, History of Violence, The Hunt, Riders of Justice, American Psycho, Unforgiven ?
These are all some of my favourite movies.

Yes mate I've seen it, excellent movie, I really enjoyed it.

Thought 1883 was dire. Can't remember one good actor. Sam Elliott would be the best known but he's so old now 77, he does everything in slow motion and can hardly speak, his words sound garbled mostly. Pretty unbelievable he would be leading a wagon train a thousand miles at that age.
I watched 3 episodes but got bored with it.

Wind River was a great film.

Wind River was a great film.
Speaking of...

River

Amazon product ASIN B084T2QBWC
It's nominally a detective mystery - but it's much, much more. About a lonely cop who recently lost his female partner.

I won't go into further detail - to avoid spoiling the plot.

I can't recommend River enough - 9.9+ out of 10. One of the top 5 series on TV I've ever watched.

Loved this series - my wife watches anything and everything in this genre. Nicola Walker (she's played a few detective roles) is also very good as his partner.

Nicola Walker is an amazing actress. Moreover, she seems to be very discriminating - everything I've seen in which she appears is top notch.

River though - is a cut above all else.

That might be an issue. I found it jarring in the trailers because it's so different to his usual voice but I have met londoners with a similar accent and he nails the small turns of phrase and IMO sells it pretty well. It's not Dick Van Dyke.
Isn't the accent supposed to sound 'off'? The character is an American with dissociative personality disorder. I suspect as the series goes on, we'll discover that the British accent is an unconcious immitation. Oscar Isaac can do a very good British accent (see Agora), so I imagine he's intentionally doing a 'American trying to do a bad British accent'.

There's a new one on AMC called "That dirty black bag" or something like that.
It's a western and looks good from the trailers. I'll wait for it to finish so I can watch all at once.
Edit: Added the trailer.

Great recommendation, thanks.
It’s like Preacher meets Ozark with hints of The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs thrown in for good measure. Nice one

Watched first 2 episodes of season 5 Gomorra. Not impressed. Is it a new writer /director cos theres lots of scenes of Gennaro breathing heavy and looking angry followed by lots of car journeys but fuck all dialogue.

10 minutes of nothing then something will happen but you dont know why, theres no build up beyond someone brooding.

i have faith it picks up.

The wife has never watched Lost, so thought I would sit through it again. Half way through season 2 and really enjoying it (been 12 years since I finished it previously), lots of things I had forgotten, however, I know I'm on the road to disappointment again!

After season two jump to the last season all makes sense then.

Is that Idaho ? .........his face when the customer doesn't pay..

I tried a few episodes of Yellowstone but gave up because I couldnt sympathise with any of the characters. Just seemed like an insanely rich family feeling sorry for themselves and being a pain towards everyone else. While trying to look cool.

Is there any more to this?

Never liked Westerns. Ever.
Watched 1883 last week - I'm hooked. I actually want a Stetson hat.
I'll be on Red Dead Redemption 2 all weekend in between episodes of Deadwood I've just sourced.
