UEFA scraps away goals rule.

Maybe we're beginning to see a fundamental review of outdated parts of the game.

We could start by looking at the dimensions of the penalty area - 44 yards wide is absurd, particularly when any minor infringement is penalised by a certain goal (unless it's us, of course!).

Lahoz's idiotic performance last night emphasises the need to reduce the scope for these clowns to distort top class sporting events. Football could learn a lot from hockey. It can't be beyond the abilities of sports administrators to come up with a way that stops innocuous fouls, harmless, unintentional handballs etc. from becoming match and season defining moments.

Now just change the offside rule so that there must be a clear gap between the attacker and defender......will result in more goals regardless

Happy with this as it will keep games more interesting, there's been so many ties that have been finely poised and then 1 away goal can kill it off.

No added incentive now for the away team in the first leg to attack. Expect more bus-parking in the CL knockout rounds, the main reason the rule was originally introduced back in the 60s.
Dont think that happened though, first legs are usually tight affairs.

Good incentive for the home team to try and score as many as possible without fear of conceding an away goal.

Good.

Whilst I understood the rationale for the rule being introduced, it seemed skewed that one team could have additional time to score away goals in the second leg.

In addition, it also seemed bizarre that you can score the same amount of goals as an opponent over two legs yet find yourself out of the competition.

Glad they've got rid of it, was a rubbish rule (and not just because we've fallen foul of it a few times). I'd bin extra-time as well tbh, and go straight to penalties if teams are still drawing after the two legs.

That would be fairer and not give an advantage to the home team of playing extra time in front of their fans.
