I think a lot of local derbies are only intense in terms of bragging rights, but as an adopted Mackem I can confirm that Sunderland and Newcastle supporters genuinely do dislike each other. As with Burnley and Blackburn, it helps to have two seperate towns or cities close by each other with a bitter historical rivalry that predates league football, and Tyne & Wear has that in spades.
I have to confess I joined this forum because I was trying find out the answer to a related subject. Can anyone remember a game between City and united where the following incident happened, I think.
There was a hard tackle which left a player on the ground and roy keane ran in as if to 'sort things out'. On seeing this, Niall Quinn ran up to keane and pushed him away with what I can only imagine was the following advice "P*ss off and mind your own business". And the 'hard man' keane did exactly what he was told. If I'm not imagining this can someone please tell me which match it was. I'm not a die-hard City fan but am a great admirer of Quinn and enjoyed his contributions for City and later for my adopted city of Sunderland.
Cheers, and good luck to City this season.
