UK/GB/England Day

That cockney comedian wotsisface who goes on about men doing FUCK ALL when the opportunity arises - that's what we should be setting aside a day for (used to be every Sunday but that lamentably has been taken from us blokes), a day when we gentlemen get to do a proper, uninterrupted day of FUCK ALL.

That I will nail my colours to the mast of.

I'm in.

I sort of agree. Whilst I enjoy the culture and heritage of China, having a Chinese strain in my family, it isn't "mine" so to speak so don't feel as attached to it.

It's a bit like whereas I might admire the football of Barcelona, I would feel more pride towards it if it was played by City, a team of my own community so to speak.
For me, it is similar but slightly different. I do admire Britain in a detached way that means I don't feel British in the same way that I feel I'm a City fan. Being a good little internationalist I tend to prefer not to have a nationality. At the same time, I was brought up here and it would be foolish to think or believe even for a second that it doesn't play a huge part in forming you through the environment you grow up in and that in our case we are fortunate that it is a better one than the vast majority have.

I don't know quite to what extent I objectively like this country though or whether it's through conditioning. For instance, football, let's go there again. I love football, and objectively, this is the best country for it. I can make a decent objective argument for this being the best footballing country in the world. Therefore football is a good objective reason to love being in this country. However, this is where conditioning also comes in. If I grown up in Canada would I love ice hockey as much as football, if I had grown up in coastal California, would I love surfing as much? One cannot answer because one simply cannot remove oneself from their own experience and therefore answer with any real surety. For this reason whilst of course I appreciate what growing up in Britain has given me, and know now I would miss it now I've had it, I can't get into patriotism as potentially it's misplaced sentimentalism which is a consequence of your own formative experiences feeding back into themselves.

wtf are you babbling on about its not for me you soft sod.... I celebrate Oz day , Its where I live and Im proud of it........my question was would it be a good idea to have a GB day for the people who are actually proud to be British ?
as usual of course you have to start throwing the insults around
Fucking grow up you mard arse

St George is the patron saint on many countries not just England, and its not a national holiday and basically no-one gives two shits about it, its basically ignored

This is a light hearted thread to gauge the way City fans feel about having a national day for YOUR country, I love Australia Day, Im puzzled why Britain is so lacking in patriotism, hence this thread, its meant in a light hearted way though but as usual the loony miserable lefties have to turn it into some serious fucking issue/slagfest, are you ever happy about anything ?

Are you on medication?
In your first post you had a pointless bleat about political correctness before anyone said a word.
In your next you had a go at the 'loony left', again without any purpose or provocation.
So you were the first to bring politics into it.
You are basically just a simpleton who likes to start crap threads to air your facile worldview, but then throw your toys out of the pram when someone points it out.
Have you read the replies on here?
Folk who actually live here don't give a fuck about your daft idea.
Not just 'lefties' like me, but folk of all political hues.
If anyone on here is a serial miserable ****, it's you.
Every shit thread you start is a whinge about something, be it the Rolling Stones or why we don't get a hard on over some ancient saint.

Can you two give it a fucking rest?, it is like you are looking out for each others posts just to have a row.
You disagree on everything apart from City, no need for the spitefulness, and thats from a LWNJ. ;)

ok mate, sorry for my rant, I will stay away from the board for an extended period

Britain personified

Well some MP I've never heard of has put forward a Private Members Bill proposing we redesignate August Bank Holiday as Margaret Thatcher Day so I suppose anything is possible!!

<a class="postlink" href="http://services.parliament.uk/bills/2013-14/margaretthatcherday.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://services.parliament.uk/bills/201 ... erday.html</a>

I'm not sure when you first migrated Nimrod, but when I first came out in the early 80's Australia day was not a significantly celebrated day like it is now, and there was a more nuanced view that was able to recognise the achievements of the settlers but also the devastating effect of colonization on the indigenous community. When the liberals (Tories) were elected in 1996, they promoted it to suit their own political purposes, as it fitted in with their policy agenda of denying the land rights of the original owners. It has now mushroomed into a flag waving expression of nationalism which to be honest I find embarrassing and out of step with the reality of this country, you would know about the annual muslim bashing that attends the event, and the hoards of pissed up wankers draped in the flag. I'm surprised that a bright bloke like you would be sucked in.

A more appropriate national day would be 1 Jan to celebrate the federation of the 6 colonies into one nation. Im sure that any national day in blighty would be hijacked in the same way

No need for that Mate, just ignore Fetters and hopefully he will ignore you.
The pair of you come across as a bitter divorced couple, you are both good posters with very different views, i am sure those views can be expressed without the insults.

I have been guilty of being drawn into arguments, i now try to state my case then ignore them if it becomes bitter.

Peace.

At the end of this month its Australia Day and its a big celebration, a public holiday.....people stick flags everywhere, buy stupid hats, have parties, my band is playing at a huge pub party most of the day etc etc etc
Everybody feels a big sense of pride in the nation

Isnt it time for Britain or England to do this ?

Fly the flag, have a national day, Red Arrows etc etc

or is it too un PC or offensive for modern day Britain ?

There will be untold numbers who will be offended by the national flag, and there will be untold numbers who will not wish to offend the untold numbers. We live in a country where Johnny Come Latelies must not have THEIR heritage offended. Fuck the Anglo-Saxons and Celts!!

No one has been offended by the flag etc, don't believe tabloid bullshit.

Oh and on another subject 'the celts' never existed and was made up by 18th century Antiquarians based on Roman legend and Middle Age myths. These Antiquarian stories then took hold in Scotland and Ireland as it helped forge national identities. Anyway, I'll stop being a boring fuck.

Most nations celebrate their country in some way. Canada, the states, Oz, even France. But blighty, noooo. I wonder why? If there was a Manchester day I'd be all for it, sounds stupid but that's the way I feel. Call me a **** or a snob, but there is nothing of late that our country has done to make me feel proud to be British. Probably just the politics of our beloved country, but that's the way I feel. (There's probably tons of reasons to have a GB day though)

There already is a Manchester day. It's in July or August every year.
