UK in 5 years

Boris’s plan A involved customs checks away from the border, they’re just doing them at the port now.

That doesn’t mean the UK is or will be broken up.

The UK is divided, which makes it more likely that the union will be ended. Think about it. There is more of a hard border between Belfast and London than there is between Belfast and Dublin.

Now think about the Good Friday agreement.it is the law that if the Secretary of State considers that there is a majority of opinion in favour of reunification he MUST call for a referendum and he MUST act on the outcome of that referendum.

The break up of the UK will, I suspect, be part of the price we pay for Brexit.

A poll conducted in NI in september and how people voted was divided by traditional political lines for the most part, however one in 20 self-declared unionists said they would opt for unification.

The over-65s was the only age group with a clear majority for staying in the union (55 per cent to 34 per cent) while 45-64s divided evenly, and a majority of those aged from 18-44 said they would vote for unification.

That’s always been the case because of the Irish Sea.

It won’t happen, there needs to be the will of the people to break it up and there just isn’t.

The institutions and loyalties that tied communities and peoples together have largely evaporated, and people are no longer set in their ways for life. They change jobs frequently and some change their service and utility providers as often as they change their partners. We have a culture of change and people are encouraged to try something different, so it would not surprise me if that thinking doesn’t manifest itself in how the UK looks. Twelve years ago, I would never have predicted the UK would leave the EU.

I think more of the Health Service will be privatised. Prices of goods in the shop will increase .More people on zero hour contracts, there will be more homeless people, more poverty and more foodbanks. I just cant think of anything positive that will happen in the next 5 years and certainly don't believe there will be more hospitals more nurses and more police.
Shit, didn’t think things were so bad in Turkey, who voted for it?

I said a hard border, not a physical border. Once we leave, it will be the first time in centuries that there will have been frictionless trade between NI and the rest of the UK

As to the will of the people, see UG’s post.

As I’ve said, there would have to be customs checks within the UK anyway, as Johnson’s plan A was to have them inside NI and away from the border, there’s no way of doing it, leaving the EU and upholding the GFA.

It won’t affect most people’s lives and life will continue to go on.

Plus it’s also temporary.

UG’s post is hardly a detailed piece of evidence now is it.

It isn’t temporary, because as you say the GFA is incompatible with separate trading standards and tariffs within the UK. For as long as we remain (a) outside the EU and (b) politically United to Ireland there will be an internal border.

It will affect people’s lives because there is an extremely vocal and ideologically driven separatist movement within NI that will waste no opportunity to remind the population how ridiculous it is that there is a border between Belfast and London and how much more sense it would make for NI and the ROI to be one nation.

If you don’t agree that creating an internal border between NI and GB where there is no border at all between NI and the ROI is likely to hasten the break up of the UK then that’s your opinion and you are entitled to it. I don’t share it.

Engerland is their dream.
