UK out of EU

Oh, if only we hadn't given all those countries independance!

You can't turn the clock back - we're in it, and it will be too costly to get out of it. The trade lost by us leaving would be irreplaceable, and after your jingoistic 'Hurrah', we'd soon be heading down the pan, with less and less rights for those workers at the bottom end, and less pensions and benefits for those that really need them.

If it's an attack on the ills of society that brings about threads like this, have a think about what you want to achieve by leaving the EU, and ask whether that can be achieved by other means. If your motivation is due to the crooks and cheats we let in to the country as a result of the open borders policy throughout the EU, something can be done about that, and about the £8billion of overseas aid we are due to send out this year. Add in a change or two to the defence policy so that we stop acting like a world power, wasting billions on Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, nuclear weapons programmes, and we could redirect billions and billions to ibe nvested/spent here.

The biggest asset of the EU is that it has prevented German imperialism from rising, and helped keep the peace in western europe for 60+ years, which is probably the longest period ever, so, what price that?

The political will isn't there for any of the things I've suggested, unfortunately. Just my humble opinion, you understand.

No country has, so far, left the EU, so we would be "guinea pigs" in a fashion.

I suspect that the EU is rather like the Mafia or certain forms of religion, in that it may prove much easier to join than to leave.

I can't help but believe that if we do leave, the remaining members would make sure that we suffer economically for it in some way. And I wouldn't entirely blame them for doing so.

But, I repeat, economics are not the only factor to be considered.

Can we be so sure of that? Even if they were willing to trade, I suspect that there would be considerable resentment about our leaving. So I doubt highly that we would be allowed to continue getting all the trade benefits.

Considering the UK still has a lot of pull around the world and is the second biggest consumer in the world that has a very big trade deficit with the EU. I honestly can't see them doing much as it would hurt them much more than us.

What has completely and totally assured peace in Europe for the last 60 years and into the future is MAD (Mutual Assured Destruction).

interesting to see Serbia and Motenegro will be joining the EU,

does anyone think Turkey will ever join?

I highly doubt it, since the trend in Turkey is backward rather than forward.

My Mum has a place out there and she said nobody in Turkey including the government is interested in joining the EU, look at the absolute balls up they making of it now why would they want to join

They say that Turkey would be ready to join the EU by 2020 or even before that.

But the majority of accession chapters (32) are blocked by vetoes from the French and Cypriot governments who naturally oppose turkey's accession into the UK, as well as Turkish ports being closed to trade with Cyprus etc

Like the poster above said, why would Turkey want to join now? Their economy is booming at the moment and is in a very good strategic position.

A recent report said that no progress had been made. And if Cyprus takes the EU rotating presidency next year, Turkey have said they will cease relations with the EU.

the closure of foreign-owned factories would be a cert.the cost of doing business in the uk regarding energy prices, the third-world transport infra-structure ,the over-reliance on the south-east mean there would be no point in having a presence here.We sell more to the eu than we buy.Job losses on an even bigger scale than is happening would be inevitable.Obviously this is very good for the conservative party but for joe public or the non-little-englanders it would be another step back to the halcyon days of the workhouse, the soup kitchens and the high child mortality days so beloved by the far right.A referendum will only happen if it suits the coallition regarding the next election, can the right-wing media sway enough voters to commit suicide in other words.
that was a party political broadcast for the idiots party

Greenland isn't an independent country. It is officially dependent on Denmark, which subsidises the Greenland economy. It's position is somewhat similar to that of the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man with regard to the UK.

All these places have very small populations, Greenland has less than 60,000. The EU seems prepared to tolerate these anomalies because of that. They would be less prepared to make a special exception for a country of 60 million population.

Is all of Europe armed with nukes now? When did that happen? I was under the impression that it was just us and the French.
