ULEZ Letter

A fireman not keen on clean air, the world's gone mad:-)

I think he is retired now. So he's driving around in a dirty diesel and burning smokey wood to his heart's content.

Next he'll be smashing up smoke alarms and stealing fire extinguishers. :)

It's almost impossible to drive anywhere now without falling foul of some ruse or hair-brained scheme designed to raise cash or damage your car.

Driving to London you pass though Low Emission Zones and Ultra Low Emission Zones, the signs are quite intimidating especially when you have no idea if you are compliant or not. When you get there you have to avoid the Congestion Zone, or make sure you pay up pronto. And woe betide anyone entering a bus lane to make a left turn early, even though the fuckers won't give way to you when you do reach the 3 metre stretch that is kindly permitted to enable you to make the turn. You spend more time watching for signs and faded road markings that warn of hefty fines than you do trying to avoid genuine hazards such as pedestrians.

It's no better on the motorways, trying to filter across multiple lanes of a busy motorway to make an exit while trying to ensure you don't exceed the average speed limit can be a fun challenge. And having to crawl past enormous lorries rather than quickly pass them is "exhilarating". And smart motorways are great, I mean the hard shoulder was just a waste of space wasn't it.

Back on the roads, make sure you avoid rear-ending the numpty in front who hit the anchors as they approached a speed camera, they clearly did not know they were already under the limit. Speed bumps are fun though aren't they, especially those with no visible markings or warning, you can get "air" over them at 30. And then there are the traffic calming chicanes, what a great idea that is, turn your local high street into a race track. Mind you, in most of Oxfordshire, and Wales I believe the limit is now 20 for no apparent reason other than the power to make such a decision has been delegated to the local loony councils. Mind you, it's still not quite as barmy as Poynton's "shared space" experiment.

Cheer up mate.

I do agree fully with you.

Don’t forget trying to avoid fucking potholes everywhere

fuck around and find out - all those cheering on the Bladerunners this is what you are cheering on. Imagine if it was daytime and there were kids walking home from school and crossing that road

Why isn't it being treated as terrorism?

Fear not.

Labour might scrap some of these policies and the cheerleaders on here will herald it as a great decision and a victory for the common man.

The Green Party support this saying "If every Londoner drives an electric car we won't tackle congestion, air pollution or the climate crisis.”

Erm… so why are we bothering with EVs exactly if not for the environment?

Because it's nowt to do with emissions and the environment, it's all about raising money. Next one will be Burnham doing it in Manchester.

Would make sense if it was cheaper for EVs rather than totally exempt. £5 a day instead of £15. Or £5 for small EVs and £7.50 to £10 for a larger one.

EVs aren't a magic bullet for the environment. Lithium and cobalt mining can be devastating on the environment of where it's dug up.

Car ownership needs to reduce in cities and pooled vehicles can be used instead.

Not sure the Greens statement makes sense about air pollution unless she wants action on another contributor to air pollution.

EVs don't cause air pollution.

If we had congestion and it was all EVs then of folk want to sit in it that’s up to them. I don’t get the logic to say we will charge you to waste your own time. I get it with petrol/diesel cars and I understand how EVs can cause fossil fuel cars to be stuck on traffic but surely we want to encourage them - like you say even half price is better than full whack.

There is certainly a pay back as EVs do have larger upfront environmental costs.
