I remember leeds away, end of the game Mcallister is walking off the pitch and I'm sure it was Howard wilkinson walked towards him hand out as though to shake it, Mcallister stood there hand out as wilkinson walk straight passed him to Gio and promptly shook his hand.
Leaving Mcallister stood there hand out after been run ragged by the little magician.

Used to love watching the lad play, he was class and as others have said, during some very dark City days.Comparisons with todays players aren't really fair, the game is miles different now to the style of play then. As I said, I loved the lad b ut my personal favourite midfielder has to be Ali Bernarbia.

Don't understand some of the negative comments on here. Gio was an absolute joy to watch
and for many fans he was the only reason to turn up week in week out. He brightened up what was a shite time at the club and I'll always thank him for that.

Never saw him play because he was before my time but those keepers look shit, the Southampton keeper especially, not sure he would have looked quite as good against the class of players in the league these days, probably why he never really did anything after his stint with us

Amazingly skillful player with the talent to have been among the very best. I fear that what ruined him was that for three vital years of his career when he should have developed from a outrageously gifted 22 year old into a world star were spent among the bailing out the donkeys we put in the team with him. The one (very) bright spot in the darkest days.

I think thats why you dont think he would cut it in the league now. Players like scholes and giggs touching forty can hack it. Kinkladze on his city form would walk into this team.

Still one of my favourite players. There's an optimistic 'messi vs kinkladze' video on youtube, with the right eyes there are plenty of similarities. There'll be reasons why he never made it to messi's level in the past, but the talent was there for all to see and its rarer than rocking horse shit, even amongst the very best. 15 years too early.

..imagine Silva playing for Blackburn Rovers and you'll get the idea...world class but on his own.

common lets be honest we ruined the guy, name me any of are current squad who would stay if we went down.
if he was in the barca youth set up are had even joined utd as a kid kinkladze could have been anything, the guy was a genius with the ball at his feet.

Not really, a decent player in a terrible team.

The Southampton goal was overhyped, ran past three or four defenders who never even put as much as a half hearted challenge in and chipped the ball over a goalkeeper that had gone to ground far too soon and was a laughing stock in regards to keepers at that time due to his frequent and awful blunders.

Its amazing how it really looks without blue tinted galsses on.

He's in the past, a very dark part of it as well. Wouldn't get in the 25 man squad now.

No way, he was a joy to watch. Quality!!

roger ringpiece, it really is time you took off your joe royle tinted glasses. yeah it wasn't a particularly good goal. neither was maradona's against england. terry fenwick and peter reid? yeah, rubbish goal!

Great player if it was only for a few years...what I always wondered was how the fuck we managed to get him in the first place....oh and he breeze into today's squad might not start much but coming off the bench what a player to have that would be

Pure joy to watch for anybody who enjoys watching football,we were shite at the time he was worth the season ticket money on his own.Remember talking with a United fan at the time(one of the more sane ones)he reckoned he'd have Gio in their team and i said who would you drop to get him the fact he said anybody said it all.

I remember more than the famous youtube clips the fact that in pretty much every game he would go through pretty much the entire opposing team on his own in the space of half a pitch. Often this was the only joy in the whole game as we were usually already 1 or 2 goals down. It's also worth saying that having run said half pitch, through at least seven opposing players who tripped themselves up while trying to run and watch Gio's feet at the same time, he would most of the time make a pigs-ear of the final ball /shot - in fairness he was looking to pass to Lee Bradbury rather than Aguero! Love him to bits, and watching those clips reminds me of the speed of movement and thought, as well as that rare ability to make it look like the ball was actually attached to his feet by an elastic thread. Asking how he would fair in the current squad is like having a Tyson vs. Ali conversation - the truth is we'll never know, but as soon as time travel becomes feasible I'll be expecting the sheik to stump up the cash and give Gio a couple of starts - even if it means leaving Silva on the bench to rest his ankle! I also remember the relief when he went to Ajex for (at the time) a decent fee of around £4mill if I remember rightly. We all knew he was going and it would have made the dark days darker if he would have ended up at the dippers or the scum.

Great player but definitely not good for the team.

It always seemed at the time(probably more down to Ball) that the gameplan was simply "give it to Kinky and hope for the best" you are asking for relegation doing that and that's what we got, twice in three years.

Yes the players around him were shit but there have been shitter teams than ours in 96 who have stayed up. We were pretty shit for the previous 5 or 6 years as well and still stayed up until Kinky came along and when you put so much emphasis on one player and virtually ignore the rest of the team there's only gonna be one outcome. Joe Royle saw through it straight away and immediately dropped him. Didn't work because it was too late by then. Compare him to a player like Benarbia who for me was much better for the team as he fitted into a system rather than just trying to do it all himself, there was a proper gameplan worked around him and the team benefitted from that.

Having said that he was an amazing player and it was a privilege to have seen him in the flesh. I have always believed MCFC would have been a lot better off without him but all the same we had a terrific talent there and even though they were shit times, it's still great to be able to look back and admire what a great footballer he was.

Keepy uppy tricksters at half time are incredibly skilful but not good footballers.

Gio was a bad signing for City because the whole team was built around him and we had some decent players at the time. Quinn, Rosler, Flitcroft, Lomas should not have gone down.

Used to spend hours waiting for a moment of magic, but often it would never come. He was the only thing worth watching at the time, that's true, but we'd still have been better off without him ior we should have had a better manager who would have insisted he play a certain role and not float all over looking for the ball

Never got to watch him in my lifetime but I still love him. He has a brilliant name, what's not to love.

No doubting his talent but stood out in a piss poor team.

He had 3 seasons with us and got relegated twice. When he left, his world class footballing talents took him to, erm .... Ajax then ..... erm, Derby County.

Good player, yes. Over-hyped just a touch and nowhere near the class of player that we have the privilege to watch every week in the modern day team.

Thanks for what you did Georgi - but we have moved on.

Do what ??
