United (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Usually try to be balanced and look for some positives here and there but today there were none. The only saving grace was Donnarumma keeping it down to 3-0, and Khusanov did his best in the face of an absolute onslaught.

That was one of the worst peformances I’ve seen for years. Out-fought, out-played, out-thought, out-everything. And against THEM of all teams.

Can’t even get upset about the Dalot incident because it’d have made no difference.

Embarrassing performance.
We lost 3-0?

We can’t be sure what the outcome would have been if Dalot marched as the rags would have been forced to change tactics

A proper pair of defensively-minded full backs. Some who have YouTube highlights of something they've done in their own half would make a change, and would turn things around overnight.

Other positions can be taught, but I don't think that I've ever seen a player 'converted' into a proper full back and I've been watching football since the 60s. You have the instinct, or you don't.
Glyn Pardoe was a converted striker.

It’s the manner of the defeat today.

When we start slow it’s easy to be pessimistic but that one today was a concern right from the team selection. Injuries forced our hand somewhat but to start that back four was appalling and to add the cart horse version of Rodri with zero available protection was a disaster in waiting if our attackers had an off day… which they did, horrifically.

The tactics were appalling as well, you don’t play a high line with a make shift back four, it’s utter suicide.

The fact we came out of there only losing by 2 is a miracle. Which when you consider how shit they are and the fact Michael Carrick is their manager is almost comical.

At least the media will be calling him the natural successor to Bacon Face after this one game.
Maybe losing this battle means we will win the war

I've thought our press has been too slack for ages and it was completely proven today. Their defence had so much more time on the ball than ours. Need a big shot of urgency injected into every player.
PS why did Doku not take his man on once even though he was on a yellow from early on?

One of the most shameful derby performances I’ve ever seen

Apart from Donnarumma who saved us from total humiliation and Kushanov who was very good… I wouldn’t give a single player more than 2 out of 10

Apart from Rico fucking Lewis who I’d give zero.. please fuck off to Burnley or somewhere asap

Yep

It's one the hardest roles on the field because you're asked to run up and down all game
But you're spot on, Natural instincts can not be learnt in adult life. Players asked to cover a role will fuck up in the biggest moments, because any good manager would attack City's weaknesses

I called it in the pre match thread as soon as I saw that terrible team selection from Pep (and got a fair bit of stick)…………..

“3-0 to United. That’s an awful team selection from Pep. Two very slow full backs. Why are Cherki and O’Reilly on the bench? Worst back four I’ve seen City field since the 90’s!”

But we didnt try 1 pass thru ball or ball over top to him, what else can we expect from him he needs service
I get that but it’s not just today is it Anonymous for weeks , he gets a chance and he doesn’t connect right, it’s into the ground or off his studs Frustrating to say the least

Well I wouldn’t blame him if he looks at this forum comprising lots of short memories. Fortunately he probably- hopefully - doesn’t
Not rearly short memories is it,every city fan loves pep an always will, but that today snd other games this season ,just isnt right ,that today was fuckin diabolical, high line with 2/3 makeshift defenders its amature hour, got red mates laughin at me sayin that was easiest game for us this season, why are u so open, now that is worryin but its true, that shite team cud of scored 5/6 its embarrassing and falls on man in charge just like any other high end job in life

3-0? Someone left ealry!

The squad we have is geared towards transition football.

Haaland, Cherki, Semenyo, Doku, Reijnders and Marmoush would all benefit from attacking in transition rather than against low blocks.

While our defence would be a lot more comfortable playing deeper.

While our midfield (Nico G, Bernie and Rodri) would all much prefer playing deeper and having the game in front of them than constantly chasing back.

Yet we have a manager who does the complete opposite and it shows in how poor our performances actually are.

The style of play we use does not play to the strengths of the majority - if not all - of our players yet it’s persisted with. Absolutely infuriating really.

Even today, the rags were desperate to play that way and we played right into their hands. If we sat back and used the pace on the counter to hit them; they would’ve been stuck because they’re poor against low blocks too. Yet we didn’t and got embarrassed as a result.

It’s really, really poor from Pep. Borderline neglectful.
He always has done, in his first season when we played the Leicester premier league winners with Vardy and Mahrez I was interested to see how the greatest coach in the world would handle them, he played a high line and we conceded four.
Our style can be frustrating even dull at times but it works against all but a handful of opponents and the odd team that can concentrate on a low block for 90mins

That was the first defeat in PL in 13 Get the defenders back and move on
That has been coming for several weeks. No wins in the last 4 and any one of those could easily have been losses too.

What defenders are we getting back to make a difference to the state of us back there? The only one who isn't injury prone (Gvardiol) has the worst injury of the lot.

Our first choice full backs are makeshift. It's a mess. And no way to build a foundation for a title winning team.

Only managed to see about 2/3 rds of the game owing to accompanying my wife for an urgent opticians appointment, Was pretty clear from the team selection that City were never going to cope with breakaways and then didn't show enough inventiveness up front to compensate. So no complaints about the result which was largely self inflicted.

Suppose I should be pleased that Dalot at least was shown a yellow card, fairly similar early challenges on City players haven't even resulted in cards at all. However, any time after about 60 minutes and that would have been a red card in most referee's eyes, I think. I abhor this "amnesty' period in the early stages of games, referees should start as they mean to go on, otherwise they risk the game getting out of control or worse serious injury.

Still doubt whether City would have got even a draw against 10 men.
