yeah,Can’t remember a more subdued build up to a derby for a while. They technically don’t really have anything to play for other than pride, whereas this result alone won’t determine our top four/five chances. Just looked at Red Cafe, and their pre-match thread only has two pages (with the usual caveat that they have more posts per page). Obviously I’m desperate to beat them, but it’s not got the same jeopardy factor for us as in recent years. Either way it feels a bit strange.
definitely an odd one.
for starters, league-wise, there's not a great deal riding on it.
they're doing nowt and we are probably going to make top 5,
so there's no great risk or endangerment to either team in losing.
in recent years,
winning almost every game at this stage of the season has been crucial to league success for us,
but that nervousness is not here this year.
of course,
if they beat us again then it'll give them summat to be happy about,
but deep down, even though we've been below par this season,
they know (and we know) we are miles better than them,
and they'll likely be going into this thinking they're going to lose.
it's almost the reverse of how things were decades ago:
for them now, as it was for us back then,
local bragging rights is pretty much the sum total of it.
on top of which,
we've sort of got used to losing games again this season,
it doesn't feel so devastating somehow.
that said,
i'm sure early afternoon tomorrow the emotions will kick in,
but yeah, agreed,
a strangely quiet build-up.
