United Airlines - Passenger removal

Attempting to resolve the seat shortage situation after passengers had already boarded and were seated was the major cock-up here. Once it became apparent that nobody was going to be bumped voluntarily there was little the cabin crew and pilot could do. The passengers should have been asked to disembark and the situation should have been resolved at the gate. This would have taken time, but probably less than the eventual delay and without the PR disaster that was to follow.

This

or just offer more cash until someone pukes.

I have been at a gate when they offered 200 usd the amount went up every 10 minutes cant remember how much by until they found their 7 seats, it didnt take long and the share price didn't take a battering.

Is it true about them getting the wrong Dr Dao, I have seen the original stories online, but no retractions.

Mail, NY Times and Telegraph all still have the stories up on AMP so if they have been retracted that's extremely sloppy.

If it's true that they've got the wrong person they're well and truly up shit creek without a paddle.

My thinking as well, seems unlikely they would all be that inept, but these are weird times

Seems extremely unlikely because it's such an odd story with the pro poker links etc and would be so easy to cross check photos, but I've seen the media make horrific mistakes rushing for an exclusive or a big story before so...

No doubt the press officer at United will use the, "they all look the same to me defence", if it does turn out to be the wrong man.

Going by the original reaction from their CEO after the incident I wouldn't rule it out...

Sadly it does seem to be the same man but even so, his past has nothing to do with what happened on the plane.

Rag Airlines were in the wrong on a number of counts. First of all, this wasn't a case of simply overbooking or overselling. That involves selling more seats than there are available and hoping some people don't turn up. This was a case of them having the right number of people for the seats available but then finding they had to fly four relief crew to Louisville.

Second they do have the right to deny boarding but the passengers were already boarded so they came under flight deck rules. Passengers can still be ejected for a number of reasons but needing the seat at the last minute doesn't appear to be one of them.

Third, there is no maximum amount that they are restricted to under these circumstances. There is a set tariff but there's no compulsion to restrict themselves to that amount. If they were really stuck, offer people a couple of thousand dollars, a hotel stay, limousine travel, free flights whatever.

Finally they have rules about who can be bumped and someone travelling with others should have been low on that list. Also people who had confirmed seat reservations shouldn't be bumped. If someone's just turned up and paid for a ticket then they should be the first ones on the list for involuntary bumping, if that's absolutely necessary.
