Yeah it's a myth. Blackburn finished 21 points off the title after they won it. Probably other examples of it happening too. But it's entirely possible United will set the new record this year.

Blackburn only got 61 points in 95/96 as champions.

In fact United to retain their title in 96/97 only got 75 points.

United in 97/98 got 77 points, less than us.

Arsenal the following season as champions got 78 points, same as us.

In 2001/02 United got 77 points as champions the previous season.

In 2002/03 Arsenal got 78.

In 03/04 United got 75 points.

In 2010/11 Chelsea got 71 points.

So out of all that:

Worst PL Title Defences

1) Blackburn 95/96 61 pts.
2) Chelsea 2010/11 71 pts.
T3) Man Utd 03/04 & 96/97 75 pts.
T5) Man Utd 01/02 & 97/98 77 pts.
T7) Arsenal 02/03 and 98/99, Man City 12/13 78 pts.

So not even close, in fact we're closer to halfway in the list than we are worst.

To be fair to them I have no idea how they lost this game. I'd be livid.

I watched the whole game (during City it was on in the background) and Everton played even with them.
