Sky News had a financial analyst on a little while ago. He was suggesting that year one of not qualifying for the CL would cost United up to 20% of their turnover - not just the prize money and TV money, but the clauses in the sponsorship payments that require CL football. He then went on to talk about how it puts them into a real quandary as they'd have to borrow the money to try and get them back into it the year after, and that then becomes a gamble..

There's no way united would countenance such a thing, as they only spend money that they've 'earned'.

Not getting CL this season would cost them something like £50m in lost prize money and ticket revenue alone. It may also impact commercial revenues and they'd struggle to sell ordinary season tickets and corporate hospitality for domestic games as well. That could cost them another £20m. Knock that off those 2013 accounts and they're looking at a huge loss.

Worse would be the impact on their cash flow. They generated a net £60m from their operations in 2012/13 after paying interest and other finance costs. £45m of that went on new players so losing that free cash would restrict them signing anyone or they'd have to go into further debt to do it.

As I say, it's stuff we know, but I've not seen anyone on tv talking about it in such bald terms before. And it's not like you read it in the press!
