It's amazing to see that the very image they have promoted for the past two decades is the very thing that is hindering them.
They have well and truly bought into their own arrogance, to the extent that they are sounding more Scouse than their Red Cousins. It is staggering to see fully grown adults being totally oblivious to what is blindingly staring them in the face, and instead clinging to some myth from the past on how special their club is.
You really have to give credit to the way the media have made them the monster they are. If the Third Reich had a PR machine like United then I guarantee that we would all be speaking German.
You have United fans banging on about City being a spending club whilst totally ignoring the £400 million they have spent since Good Ol' Purple Nose left.
You have them banging on about bringing youth through. When in fact they binned off Evans, Fletcher and Welbeck, for foreign imports, the moment they could.
They bang on about giving managers a chance when they sacked Moyes in under a year and have turned on Van Gaal already.
They only listen to what they need to listen too. They support a club who's negativity is swept under the carpet and most of them have done since football was 'officially' invented in 1992.
Sooner or later they will acknowledge the self-delusion that they are under. Only once they have done that can they move forward as a club. Personally, I think it will be us getting Pep which will wise them up to the idea that they are no longer the prestigious number they once were.
The sheer fact that they honestly thought someone like Moyes could just waltz into the club and pick up from where Taggert had left is incredible. The fact that they still think any manager can come in and work under that old regime, including the Adulterer is madness.
Clubs evolve and to do that they need to bin off all communication with the 'Class of 92'. They need to put them in the past where it belongs and look forward. I don't for one minute believe that Woodward is not aware of this. He knows that he has a chance to move forward with Mourinho and become a more modern club. It'll probably make them more defensive but will ensure they are competitive.
However, this all links back to the first point. So long as the media will peddle out all of their lies, link them with all the big names, constantly praise them at the expense of their rivals and be in the mix for the top 4, then I don't think their owners care. Long may it continue!!
