I think united saw the turtle as a banker, a certainty and a safe pair of hands that guaranteed success. They were reluctant to give gollum too much money and he came with a reputation of achieving moderate success on a shoestring anyway.
With TT, they assumed that giving him 250 million would be money well spent. It hasn't worked out.
To suggest that we're in a more precarious position than them is laughable. That 250 million will raise eyebrows with shareholders and will be seen as a bad investment.
Contrast that with Sheikh Mansour. Any deal he gets involved with under that amount doesn't even register on his website because it's that insignificant to him.

Ps, the remark about only getting foreign supporters due to success has to be the most hypocritical post I've ever seen on here.

With regards to your last comment:
It would be hypocritical only if I denied Utd got most of its fans that way.
Fans outside of the core areas of City's local support hardly share anything in common with the locals.
Success is the only binder.
I have always maintained that success is the fastest way of getting a new fan and 'sustained' success is long term binder for converting new fans into loyal fans.

Got it. So ADUG is focused on 'entertainment' in general and not just sports?
Does ADUG also own a stake in media channels, movie halls, etc. as part of their strategy?

Etisalat, a satellite television company, is owned either by HRH or one of his relatives.

It must be hard when you know the end is near. I was talking to a photographer once and he was telling me how great Frank Clark was as manager at City, nothing was to much trouble for him, he told me on they day was sacked the press knew he was going and as he left the photographer asked him for a picture and Clark just said "fuck off"

When we were in Dallas recently, most of the City fans we spoke to started following us before Sheikh Mansour bought us, so your assumption is false in that regard.

ADUG is in the business of expanding the business assets/portfolio range of Abu Dhabi. Manchester City offers a relatively inexpensive (as in he can sell the club at almost any time and get a sizeable amount back) and very high profile method of imagemaking. Rising from the dark, greasy shadow of the swampdonkey neighbours in the most hyped league in the world, playing the greatest teams in Europe.... all gives visibility. One big thing for businessmen in that part of the world is 'face' - they don't like looking bad, they like looking benevolent; regenerating large areas of East Manchester can be shown as benevolent.
As a result of the football ownership, they have a partnership now with Chinese state-sponsored investment/media conglomerate, and will be allowed more freely to operate in China.

Sport is a tiny aspect of ADUG's range. It is useful for what it gives them and not for how much cash it can make them; I don't think they care about that side of things really.

And yes, I believe they own Sky Arabia or something; and then there's the Chinese media conglomerate - push City, push ADUG, get returns. This is quite similar to how Murdoch tried buying the Swampdwellers in the 1990s, and why he was so desperate to make football a cash cow. It was an attempt to break into the Chinese market with Star TV.

All of this will be quite readily available to find. WIkipedia almost certainly will have pages on it.
