For a number of weeks, Young's diving became accentuated and a significant number of comical and important penalties were awarded as a result. In any other industry, where information is exchanged between people within that sphere, such a course of events would never have happened, unless it was bent.
united were getting decision after decision which related to a player who had been exposed as a cheat. That extends beyond subjective interpretation, into the realms of the farcical.
To my mind there is no other logical explanation for that other than corruption, whereas I don't hold that view about the decisions in 2014.
This cannot be said often enough or loudly enough.
They cheated their way into contention that year and damn near got away with it. Even since, they have the brass neck to point the finger at QPR for not trying in the final minutes.
I'll never forget Butch Wilkins review of that dive of Young's v QPR. Asked, straight out by Ed Chamberlain, was it a penalty, he nodded sagely and assured us that "in the context of the modern game" it most certainly was. His fellow pundit, Father of the Year, was quick to agree. That issue addressed and settled, Ed saw no reason to pursue the matter further.
