Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says he must "wait and see" how long captain Wayne Rooney will be sidelined with a knee injury.

It is thought Rooney, 30, will miss about six weeks but Van Gaal did not put a timescale on his recovery in a news conference on Wednesday.

"We have 13 players injured and Wayne is one of them," said the Dutchman.


England captain Rooney had already been ruled out of Thursday's Europa League match against FC Midtjylland.

Van Gaal added: "He scores a lot of goals so he is very important for us. We know that but we have to cope."
