Not sure he actually planned it but It certainly did no harm to lose to United.Pep is an evil genius. Keep winning a shit-load of trophies whilst hamstringing one of your two main rivals by allowing them to beat you occasionally.
I guess our long term strategy as you describe benefited at the expense of a winning sequence.
