Because there is a finite amount of energy in the universe which doesn't itself grow, as such. The space between things just increases. Now here’s a conundrum. While space is expanding, bodies within it are not. How come?
Explains a lot. Such as the entropy at the heat death of the universe because things have stretched so far apart, there just isn't enough energy to move anything any more. All the energy and matter is still in there - it's now just spread too damned thinly.
