United felt like they’d improved loads because they were closer to the top.
The reality is United are about the same level they have been for years but the top of the Prem isn’t as good as it has been in many of the last five or six years with City’s Centurions season in 2017-18, City+Liverpool’s amazing run-in with 98 and 97 points in 2018-19, Liverpool’s 99 points in 2019-20, then City+Liverpool’s title run-in last season.
This season, City are nowhere near as good as we were in those seasons above. We look at the level similar to 2019-20 (81 points) and 2020-21 (86 points) [which is around what we’ll achieve this season, I reckon]. Plus Liverpool and Chelsea have dropped away this season and allowed spaces in the Top 4 to open up.
The World Cup has not helped and disrupted a lot of team’s rhythms. Two teams in City and Liverpool have duked it out in the league over the past 4 seasons expanding a lot of energy. City have a better squad than Liverpool’s to minimise the drop off in the team. The fact we ain’t playing well but still in the mix is testament to what Pep can drag out of the players.
United have had a purple patch after the World Cup and are starting to hit a wall at the business end of the season. Or perhaps their small time operation of a club think that a league cup is an amazing achievement and they don’t need to bother till August.
