United Thread - 2023/24

I've posted this in the Bobby Charlton thread, but it probably should belong in here, and I'm genuinely interested in our responses to my question.

We've been singing the "jelly and ice cream" song for years. Thousands of impressionable young blues will have heard thousands of older blues singing that song, thousands of times. They will have heard dad's sing it, mum's sing it, brothers, peers, uncle Tom Cobley and all sing it. Drummed into them from an early age, accepted as harmless "bants" without any thought as to the inevitability of it happening.

So, we have a problem here Blues.

If we're calling out and reporting fellow Blues over a couple of misguided Charlton chants, God only knows what will happen when the GPC finally moves on. We'll have more banning orders than SC holders.

We'll have a 1000 page thread with Blue on Blue rows, hand-wringing off the scale, 18-25 group blame, ban hammers, a general shitshow. Older Blues ashamed by the chant, despite the fact they've probably all sang it on every away concourse across the land, as I have..on many an occasion.

There will be totally justified grief across in Trafford, but the grief amongst us Blues will be just as unpleasant.

So, I have a simple question. The next time you hear the "jelly and ice cream" song will you join in?
I will for Ferguson, I wouldn't have for Charlton.
Charlton was pre-total tribalism, GPC promoted and reveled in it. I'm 67 and even though I'm a yank, have detested the man since he showed up in Trafford. RIP Sir Bobby.
See you in hell, "fergie".

Too right! I hope pep gets this into the players. All next week the media will be banging the United doing it for Bobby drum, we won’t hear one thing about franny! I hope pep gets them fired up to do it for our legend!
Perfect time for Framnys classic hatrick at old Trafford to be emulated...

I haven't heard the jelly and ice cream chant for ages. As we've become more successful and the rags shite it's become almost irrelevant. Ferguson and his era have long gone.
Bobby Charlton I wouldn't disrespect. A rag he might have been but he always came across as a quiet decent bloke and he was a great player for England. I actually met him once when I was a kid. Myself and the family had gone fishing at Lymm Dam just after England had won the world cup. My dad spotted Bobby and said why don't I ask him for his autograph. I replied no he plays for United but I did eventually chase after him and ask for it. He was a real gent and laughed when I told him I supported City. Rest in peace Bobby and to any City fans disrespecting him you're hurting our club much more than you'll ever hurt his family or the rags. Stop it.

Bit disgraceful that a handful of people singing a song has made the back page of the biggest papers in the country, whilst distasteful, is it really back page stuff?

It's like the media are stoking the flames trying to drum up trouble at the weekend.
Wouldn't be the first time.

I still remember us being tainted by the scousers booing George Best minute silence.
