United need to stop signing players over the age of 28. They work for a bit in the short term but they're constantly having to plug gaps every two years. Casemiro, Varane, Ibrahimovic, Schweinsteiger, Evans, Falcao, Cavani, Eriksen, half-a-dozen more. Their succession planning has been shit for about 15 years and that's why they are where they are.
I feel like Louis Van Gaal is the only manager they've employed since Ferguson left that seemed to understand United needed a young side that required some time to gel. De Gea; Valencia, Smalling, Rojo, Shaw; Herrera, Blind, Fellaini; Mata, Di Maria, Van Persie. He finished 4th with that side and battered us in the derby at Old Trafford that season.
The following season he bought Memphis Depay, Martial, Schneiderlin, and Darmian. Suddenly their team was actually quite youthful? And that was even more the case when Lingard and Rashford broke through. By the season's end their team was De Gea; Darmian, Smalling, Blind, Shaw; Carrick, Schneiderlin, Herrera; Depay, Rashford, Martial.
I still think they made a bit of a mistake sacking him. The football they played was pretty boring but they finished 4th and 5th, won the FA Cup, and won two Manchester derbies in that time. Us getting Pep, a long-term strategist, and them getting Mourinho, a "winner" but a short-termist in every sense of the word, was when the divide started.
