The team that lost the Maine Road Massacre 5-1, cost over £13 million. An eye-watering amount in 1989.
50% of what they were up for sale for the year before to the stretford end ball juggler.

If they are now worth 3.5b and would cost north of 4b to buy, that would mean they’d spend 2b in one year on players to be the same as what happened in 1989.

Never has so much money pro rata been spent on players versus the value of a club.

And you have their idiots saying they weren’t big spenders back then..

The "idiots" clearly being the rag lemmings and hangers-on as they wouldn't know the truth as long as they have holes in their arses !

Totally agree, but it often (in this PL obsessed era) gets forgotten that Ferguson also outspent everyone in the second half of the 80s too.
And by their 1990 FA Cup win, a lot of that was from loans that United got to build the most expensive football team ever seen in English football history at the time. It set them up to go on to win 5 league titles in the 1990s.

Same as Arsenal getting loans to build Highbury which set them up financially to go on to win 5 league titles in the 1930s.
