United v City 1974 - The Rags go down.

On a side note. Denis signed copies of his book at the Stretford Arndale. Took a few progs with me on the off chance. He signed all 3. The first two were the ones against Luton in which he scored 7 goals in all, and we lost. The third I don't think he realized was that game at OT.

Please make that number three fan who was there that day.Me and my mate were right in the corner of the score board end and the paddock and remember that day extremely well.Hardly any Rags got through to us from the pitch invasion but outside the ground was mayhem.Coppers seemed to turn a blind eye to the "aggro" that was taking place and I remember walking back into town with all the other Blues who kept together for safety.Bricks, bottles etc were the order of the day from both sides and it really was frightening.
I`ve been to Leeds many a time and I can honestly say that was on par with anything in Yorkshire.
I also remember Mike Doyle just standing there with hands on hips, probably waiting for some knob to have a go.Thankfully for them they seemed to leave Mike alone ... can`t think why ??

Yes,Doyle didnt give a shit,my Dad saw him drag a guy out of a car in Denton once who gave him the v sign, nutter but our nutter.

I can remember coming out of the Kippax after a 2-2 in 75 and united fans were everywhere, had to hide my scarfs under my jumper, was only 14.Dont recall City giving united much opposition in those days.

Things changed I noticed in the 80s/90s where like me lads that were quite young around mid 70s were now in their prime and united took some serious kick ins at MR,despite what united revisionists may say.

united have always been bullies, better in numbers.....around that time they were invading most towns in the second division and tried the same at West Ham and Cardiff .Like all bullies they were fucked when the other guy punched back, some great clips on you tube of united fans terror that day at the Hammers.

In the Main Stand left of the tunnel with a lot of CITY fans.

Elder brother and late sister were in the Scoreboard. Nothing much to report 'till we scored and it seemed like half the stand stood up cheering. Plenty of singing followed immediately.....one Jock rag couldn't take it and ran out ranting incoherently throwing the contents of his hip flask over me and my mate.

Bit of boxing on the Warwick bridge but we were back at The Church Inn in Denton at half five.

What a fucking Piss Up. Scores & scores & scores of CITY Fans with more pitching up all the time. My late Father who was in his sixties then, and would be a 103 now,led a conger round CrownPoint in and out of the Kings Head which was the rag pub in those days singing "the rags are off to Oldham".

Never saw one of the vermin.

ONE OF THE GREAT DAYS WITHOUT A DOUBT

I was 16, football violence was at its height so maybe it was for that reason I decided to go in the Stretford End paddock (on the corner) with a Rag mate. I refused to wear Red so I wore a tartan scarf (?) The Scoreboard End was full of Blues, I don't remember any trouble until the goal and then it kicked off, as someone else said I recall it was mainly kids but I may be wrong.
Anyway as we scored I jumped up in the air to celebrate, not a good thing to do because as I landed my mate kicked me in the thigh and called me a bastard. To be fair jumping up in the air was stupid so I took the kick. I expected to then get battered but nothing else happened.

One other footnote: I was home for about 6pm and the phone rang, it was a Rag who I had gone to school with but had not heard of for months, he was crying his heart out. We have suffered many relegations after that but that was one sweet moment, a 16 year old crying as he blurted out that he couldn't face anything anymore.

I was in the scoreboard end that day with my younger brother. I was 20 and he was 15. I can't remember if there were any reds in there from the start of the game , but I would suggest that there were. There were definitely some in there after the pitch invasion though. During all the mayhem my brother got his nose broken and he ended up in Salford Royal Hospital. I remind him of it every season on the OT derby day.

I was in the Scoreboard end paddock. There were plenty of United fans in there. I escaped any problems in the ground but while waiting on Warwick Road Station for a train back to Cheadle Hulme, some bastard snatched my scarf. It was a college style scarf in blue and white with maroon. It had taken ages to get hold of so I was hacked off at the time.

That match completed seven successive League visits to Old Trafford without defeat (six were wins).

I wasn't there but my Dad was (in the scoreboard end I think). He didn't have any bother but as he was forty something with an Irish accent, he probably felt safe (yes he is a Blue !).

I was there in the seats behind the goals at the scoreboard end with some other blues. I tried to not register emotion during the game but couldn't help it when Denis back heeled it in. I only shouted "YES" once but that got a barrage of abuse and twats trying to get to us. I remember some poor copper going into the stand to our left and disappearing under a crowd of scum. He got kicked to bottom of the stand. I was bricking it when the Stretford End came on but the sight of Mike Doyle just calmly walking through the lot of them gave me heart.

i was there , 16 yrs old , i,d got the bus to O.T and just paid for tickets no problem,
i was in the main stand paddock with my mate , we knew not to wear colours , and was dead level with denis as he backheeled them into division 2 ,
i think i creamed my oxford bags , saw 2 blokes in a serious fight outside proper boxing they were until coppers moved in to stop it ,older guys not hooligans makes me think red on red
on the bus struggled like mad not to smile ,had to wear a glum face like the rest ! my god what a day
