University Liberal Arts Courses in Big Trouble

I agree with the above. Universities have become a business and it’s all about making money. Most courses now are full of international students who pay ridiculous fees.

My partner was doing economics a few years ago at a university and 70% of the class was from china and could barely speak a word of English, which presented lots of challenges.

Maybe some universities need to go bust, as they are unsustainable. I’m not sure theyre benefiting younger people here as much either

Too many people go to University now, a degree used to be worth something.

There aren't enough degree level jobs going around that's why the country is fucked, we don't make anything anymore and there a load of people with Liberal arts degrees sat in HR stopping anybody from getting any fucking work done!

For a country to make real money we need to make things and for that to happen people need to get their hands dirty, people just don't want to get their hands dirty.

Going to university used to be a thing, now it seems nearly everyone is doing it and it has lost its prestige.

I'm seeing it in my own workplace. 30 years ago having a degree put new starters in the top percentile and 40-50 years ago (before my time) would see them fast tracked to upper management. Now MAs are pretty common and pretty much everyone starting has a degree. General level isn't any more educated/intelligent or capable though.

Just wait until AI properly kicks in - loads of these jobs will just disappear. I’ve been having a few issues with a local business - asked Chat GPT to help and had a perfectly drafted letter to resolve matters done in seconds.

It's brilliant for stuff like that. I always use it when I'm complaining about something or looking for a refund

Since the 80s university has been used by successive governments as a way of hiding or artificially shrinking youth unemployment. All those tech colleges and polytechnics becoming universities and letting just about anyone in to study just about anything they wanted has led to opportunity and social mobility, but also to devaluation of degrees in the employment market and crippling debts for young people.
This is exactly right and the root of the current problem.

Solved a big issue at the time (high unemployment) to push a bigger problem down the road. Introducing fees and then tripling them were just stop gaps. This was coming all the way back 4 decades.
