University Subsistence

How much do you give your kids to live on when they go to university.
I am in the fortunate position that both my kids start as freshers in the next fortnight.
I expect them to get a part time job for the days not in university.
The rent is mainly covered by the student maintenance loan, but it will leave nothing for food.
Thanks.

Nothing much - they got loans etc and then got P/T jobs. The one thing I did was regularly go and collect them from Uni ( about fortnightly ) for a weekend at home which ended with me paying for a Lidl/Aldi shop that would more or less get them through the next fortnight. Money is no good its just beer tokens. Bread, milk, spuds, cereal, beans. soup etc did far more for them and they have told me so since - taught them to prepare a decent meal too

Thanks to everyone for your input.
Much appreciated.

They will be fine with a good home life and good guidance behind them - will help if they are studying something they are invested in and enjoy as they remain focussed - it matters not what it leads to and fuck what Sunak says

My landlord for a year was a real landlord. Fucked the rent off for a few months and he made me work in his pub to pay it off. What a twat. We used to finish rugby training, Id go to work, everyone else would all pile in and we would all go to town pissed on his beer for the princely sum of absolutely fuck all. Cheers
I nearly understood that Wally.
Your landlord property wise is also the landlord of your local. He said dont pay me rent just work behind the bar. Your mates got pissed whilst you worked ?
If I'm wrong no need to reply, my heads hurting as it is.

I've been putting £100 a month away for my two since they were born.

I never went to university and started work on my 16th birthday because my parents could just about keep a roof over our heads when the interest rates hit 15 per cent.

Me and wife downsized our bigger house and banked the equity, even though our first born is still another three years away from Uni.

I wish I knew then, what I do now. Education is everything and school wasn't some sort of social club and looking forward to PE.

My two already know the value of money because they saw me lose my business during Covid.

If we can give our kids £15k each, they can enjoy university as it should be and also focus completely on their studies.

I'm fucked if they are going to be up to their eyes in debt before their mid-20s.

I question that approach.
Student loans are only repaid once you start earning above a certain threshold.
We don’t know what the future holds.
They may never earn enough to pay any back.
They may take long breaks from work when they would not pay.
The loan is written off if they are ever too ill to work permanently.
Eventually the loan is written off anyway.

If I were you I’d use the cash to help them on the property ladder.

@Colin Bells Holdall I did wonder if he'd read your opening post before contributing!
Haha, I didn’t mean to worry you CBH, it was more in reply to another poster than the OP.

But it’s always better to be aware of and talk about these thing than do what the unis are doing denying all knowledge, support and responsibility. It also might make you less concerned about how much you contribute towards their uni time…

I’m digging hole here aren’t I? I’m not suggesting that your daughter is going to get into escorting or cam work! ;)

Don’t forget n’all, all children and all families are different. Some will have parents who contributed a lot to their time at uni and the kids aren’t grateful and don’t use it wisely, for others they’re eternally grateful and it spurs them on to work hard for their parents; on the opposite end you have other parents who don’t want to or can’t afford to contribute but it teaches the kids the value of money and how to earn it, but for others it’ll create a bit of a bitter feeling or a situation where the student can’t afford to live.

So what I’m saying is, who fucking knows what to do?!

Excellent response mate.

They can blow it on what they want, but if my kids want to go to Uni, it's to make sure they earn enough in the first place.

They will have loans for course fees, of course, but anything we can do personally to make sure they don't ever have to struggle is all we care about.

If he does end up going to Oxford, he can take every loan going, because it will pay for itself.
