My speculation was that they could have achieved the same result differently ie a warning of things to come. If not then kill citizens with the second bomb if that is what is needed rather than preferred.
I agree Coventry and Dresden particularly were targeted during WW2 with direct attack on citizens.

You may well be right but we have to remember the mindset at the time. It is speculated that Dresden was a warning to the Russians, and there was clear thinking that terror campaigns could bring political outcomes (it seems there still is). Another example being the bombing of Tokyo with conventional weapons in a single 24 hour period that is estimated to have killed more than Hiroshima.

It would be far more preferable for humanity that lunatics like Hitler didn’t exist but sadly they still do today.

Two different types of bombs dropped on two previously unscathed cities so as to best judge the effects. As the headline in The Times said, it was a "successful experiment".
