I would have capitalized on something like that after the panic and fear in the aftermath of 9/11.
This seems like a prudent time to remind everyone that Iran publicly decried the 9/11 attacks, there were candlelight vigils for the victims in Tehran and Iran joined the coalition in fighting the Taliban in 2001.
They even proposed a thawing of relations and further help in the war, full transparency of their nuclear program, a promise to stop arming Hamas and Hezbollah, endorsing the 2 state solution in Palestine in return for normalising relations only for Bush to label them part of the axis of evil in 2002 and reject it out of hand.
If you then read about how Iran was fully compliant with the JPCOA even when the Obama presidency didn’t deliver on all of its commitments, and still stuck to the terms when Trump tore up the agreement, it gets harder and harder to believe that Iran is an irrational actor that is ideologically opposed to the West and it’s why they won’t do what you’re proposing.
For starters they simply don’t need to. Outside of America everyone seems to think they have the upper hand in this conflict, they’ve isolated the Americans, Trump is going off the rails because they won’t cave in to his attempts to strong arm them and the we’ve got major European countries coming out criticising the war and in talks with Iran over the strait.
We have no idea really how badly things are on the ground in Iran and how much the war is hurting them, but we do know their missile and drone launches have been stable at ~100 a day for the last month, which suggests the US and Israel aren’t getting anywhere, as does the turn towards war crimes. Global polling shows that outside of Europe and North America most people are siding with them and even in the West, everyone is blaming this on Trump/Netenyahu so they’re winning the PR war. The Republicans are going to lose in the midterms when the full economic ramifications hit the US even if the war does stop today, and if it ends up in a ground war they’ll be destroyed at the polls, no matter how much voter suppression Trump engages in.
Attacking the US at home would be the worst thing Iran could do strategically.
