I think our government is thinking that he'll only be in power for another 3 years and thinks will return to normal afterwards.

We've strategically aligned our security with the US which isn't as easy to undo as some might suggest. That will take time if it's to happen.

I'm in agreement, I'd like us closer to Europe but that will get the right and the far-right up in arms about things.

I'm not quite in alignment with your 'right and far-right up in arms' bit. There will be plenty of those of course, but most wouldn't object to ties with Europe, but not be in its pocket. More a 'common market', rather than a 'European Union'.

I see the US on a slippery slope and what this lot are doing will be massively detrimental to the whole country and its global standing, so any movement away economically and militarily should be a part of future planning.

The UK is a necessity for any future European military partnership and development, but my personal thought is that the EU couldn't organized a piss up at a brewery when push comes to shove. Hopefully I'm wrong and they have finally realized that the world is changing rapidly and what they are saying is not just talk........and more talk.
