US Politics Thread

They were more concerned with an American Government that might try to become autocratic and King-like!

The militia of which it spoke were LOCALS who could take up arms against a corrupt, overbearing, fledgling central (Federal) government force seeking to OVER-exert its power, especially by armed force, on the free states.

Today, each State has a National Guard controlled by the Governor of that State. However, many individuals, especially those identifying as Constitutional Fundamentalists, look at the National Guard as just another Govt proxy, in the same vein as that potentially autocratic central (Federal) Govt of yesteryear.

America is really more akin to 50 separate countries that has a Federal, legal umbrella. Back in the day, Virginia was such a large, populous and strong State in the fledgling Republican Democracy of the USA that they were seen as the new potential new King George, especially given the make-up of the people.
Fast-forward 232 years and it's plain to see that 2nd Amendment is just no longer fit for purpose.

Unfortunately, a lot of armed citizens and 2A advocates (the well trained militia of the Gravy Seals/Meal Team Six) seem to be on the side of the outgoing government headed by a wannabe dictator. If the wind had being blowing in the right direction on Jan, 6 2021 they would played their part in the overthrowing the government of the legitimately elected president (in waiting) and reinstated Trump.

As for the National Guard, there is no telling how many members would have sided with Trump. It would only take a few at the top, and the doubters would soon have got in line, certainly in the deep red states. When you have crackpots like Mike Flynn (He doesn't deserve his rank) who once held a high position in the Army go full-on MAGA loon, it 's not a huge leap to think many more like him in such positions were waiting in the wings.

Sure, the blue states may have held fast, but Congress and the Senate would have been divided along party lines, especially given the speeches those spineless cowards such as Cruz, Hawley, Gomhert, et al made, and the rest of the 147 Republican lawmakers who voted to overturn the result of an election on the basis of ZERO evidence that it wasn't a legitimate election. It could have EASILY descended into a civil conflict. I mean, there was almost a public hanging of the VP. If it hadn't been for the thin blue line of the capitol police...

It was THAT close.

Huh?

American politics and beliefs are extremely fractious. But it's not at all "separate countries (states)" that's at play - it's almost exclusively urban versus rural - on almost every single contentious issue.

Yeah looking from the outside, that's how the vote data plays out.

Bill Barr going in strong here. Where was this guy when he was that the DoJ doing Trump's bidding?

Disingenuous ****. Had the chance to put the knife in with the Muller report but waved it all off as nothing and redacted half of it. Loved Trump when it suited him. Like TMM above says, protecting his own arse now.

On a different note, did anyone see Gavin Newsome hand Sean Hannity his own arse recently. It was impressive. Wonder how he'd be received as the democratic nomination. Dont really know much about him. Would being the California Governor be held against him, as it seems from the outside that California is perceived as the home of the "woke"?

Sadly there are a few skeletons in his closet. He’s far from the progressive unifier Beto looked to be. Very pragmatic but also a little flaky. While smart, sharp and young, he’d have the overblown but largely believed “death of San Francisco” to answer for as he was mayor here for a long while, plus the famous “French Laundry” debacle when he and friends went to eat at the nicest restaurant in the state during COVID lockdowns while he was governor. There are a few others too . . . . but who knows what’s truly disqualifying these days. He’s no crossover candidate given his background, that’s for sure.
