US Politics Thread

It’s already been explained to you that justices accede to their positions by wildly different means depending on the jurisdiction. In fact, I think it’s been explained several times. Did you miss it, or did you ignore it?

These blanket generaliz(s)ations don’t make you look smart — they make you look uneducated.

Obviously you’ll post whatever as is your right but it’s pretty tiresome to those of us over here who actually vote for judges and/or watch judges get appointed, deal with judges, know judges, etc.
I see Biden more or less broke the record for appointing federal judges. Quite a triumph given the thinness of his majority in the senate. That would suggest the appointments were decent.

Great chat with my niece and her husband on St.Stephen’s night, both academics in Philadelphia currently.
Well, when I say currently, she lost her job and he’s about to be out of contract and it won’t be renewed as his position will go to a minority representative and both colleges they work for have already had promises of funding cuts.

Both my niece and her high profile husband who is American, are highly intelligent, highly qualified people.
They fear what Trump is about to embark on, and not particularly for their class.
They feel they are insulated from the worst effects of what will come, but the 60% working class will suffer. A high percentage of that 60% voted for this not knowing the difference between Obamacare and social/public health care/insurance etc.

The only consultation they feel is, that because of the American system, he basically has only the first two years to do as much damage as he can before becoming a lame duck ( like Biden is), in which time it is likely his ego will see him falling out with Musk and perhaps s few others.

Ok. There was a considerable amount of alcohol consumed over the course of the night, but I got the distinct impression that, they didn’t like Trump much and thought ( not surprisingly) that there is a misrepresentation or perhaps an over estimation in the media of how strong the majority vote was.
Because of the electoral college seats by population, in key states Pennsylvania the swing vote was merely circa 7k votes.

Great night by the way.
Both in academia you say?? Really since they are both highly qualified then they shouldn’t have any issues landing other gigs.

As for 60% of the working class getting hurt the next four years, in reality they have been getting pummeled the last four. Real wages down. During Trumps four years real wages up and minority unemployment at all time lows. Inflation low under Trump while it has been raging the last four years.

Regarding the closeness of the election. Basically the same could be said in 2016 and 2020. The US electorate is totally divided.

BTW you said her husband was high profile. What does the exactly mean??

I assume your niece is British. Have they thought about returning to the UK??

Inflation has been rife all over the world that’s not Bidens fault.

Saw a good video by Bernie Sanders who was talking about Musks interference in US politics, Musk basically threatened Republicans who voted to get the government bill through last week to keep the government running, he said he would basically fund others to fight them in their local elections unless they voted against it. So basically he’s saying he has that much money he can do whatever he wants, is there no law in the USA that prevents basically interference in running a government? The guy is basically turning into Blofeld, he just needs a white cat and a base under a volcano.

Substitute Musk for Soros. It’s funny for YEARS the Democrats have basically had the MSM in its pocket.

The Big 3 stations, newspapers, and CNN when it was the dominant cable network 20-25 years ago and that was all hunky dory.

Now Musk bought and took control of Twitter and the left cries at how unfair it all is. It’s not like Twitter and Zuckerberg influenced and picked sides in 2020, is it?? Nothing to see here. Like the Rags and PSR…

Let’s see how you view Musk when he turns on Trump, the guy is dangerous.

One man’s “decent” is another man’s “non-partisan.”

As you know, or should, there is a legality involved in being a publisher and a news agency. Where does X fall? Meta?

They’ve fought tooth and nail to NOT be classed as “publishers” because they want ZERO LIABILITY OR RESPONSIBILITY for allowing people to spew nonsense and spread it via their own (personal?) private ALGORITHMS that drive narrative.

We were supposed to think there's absolutely nothing wrong with him being nominated for the highest law enforcement official in the land in the first place. Naaaah, that doesn't reflect badly on Trump's judgment at all.

Cue the "What about when [non-GOP person] nominated [random other person] for [random other role]?" posts.
Yes, cue that! Coz we are sure you definitely called it out then and we'd just like to see your post on it.

Sadly justice and the legal system in the US are hopelessly wedded to politics. Both sides as cynical and transparent as each other when it comes to appointing judges and handing out pardons.
Both sides? Both sides you say? Don't let Foggy and Doma catch wind of this treacherous attempt to both sides things.

What we really have are the Angelic guardians of democracy we call those Democrats.

On the other hand we have the evil disgusting anti-everything people- We call those Republicans.

Please don't conflate the 2. It's been said that it's the kind of thing only a Nazi would do.
