US Presidential Election, Nov 5th 2024

One of my main takeaways from this election is that conservatives and liberals inhabit totally different worlds, metaphorically speaking, especially in America.

Whilst this thread is dominated by people who are devastated by the result, my timeline is absolutely rammed with Americans who are celebrating, and I mean overjoyed by the outcome.

This bifurcation feels a little bit weird, but I've realised that the only reason I hear the anti Trump message is because I read a relatively obscure sub section on a football forum, some conservatives never see it.

Conservatives have fled legacy media and get their news online, they're watching Joe Rogan, Tim Pool, Megyn Kelly, Tucker Carlson, The Daily Wire, Charlie Kirk and hundreds of other alternative information sources.

The only time they hear from the likes of Rachel Maddow is when her latest unhinged rant gets clipped and ruthlessly mocked by one of their favourite online influencers.

Another massive factor is Elon's purchase of X, which has now become very popular with conservatives for breaking news, posting memes and mocking liberals.

This is a major problem for the left because independent media is growing fast and is very popular with the younger demographic, the influence of legacy media is waning and it's being watched by a demographic that is literally dying.

Preaching to the choir is not an effective strategy, especially when that choir is shrinking, which is why echo chambers are not effective and ultimately self defeating.

So what is the solution to this? No idea.

I think what some are saying is you have to play the game and they are probably right if winning is the only goal. Unfortunately that means demeaning yourself and your values.
At the end of the day not enough people have your values because in most cases they are just cunts.

People will come up with all sorts of reasons why someone like Trump or in our case Johnson got elected. The truth is they reflect the current population more than the opposition do.

You just thought your country had a few more better people in it. Now you know it doesn't and its fucking depressing.
There’s plenty of cunts on all sides in politics. You see the cunts you don’t like for what they are and look away from the cunts you choose to support - assisted by the media sources you select.

I agree but the discussion was about voting, people will obviously be concerned about the needy right up.to the point that it actually affects them financially then its well you're just gonna have to pull yourself up by your bootstraps.

I used to have a similar attitude, if I can do it and the people I know can why can't they?

I was very wrong, took me a while though:-(
To be honest (and I might be misremembering here; after all, I went through trauma yesterday between 630pm and 715pm) I think the original post was inferring that a lot of the usual USA Democrat vote filtered away due to the issue of money and the economy (rightly or wrongly, and it's a different argument I think), as if people are just greedy. As a lot of that base are traditionally the less well off I thought it a little dismissive. People who are poorer have different priorities than what they thought the Dems were offering. That might be misguided, but it's clear it happened.

Personally, my vote here in the UK goes to whoever can sort out the public infrastructure. I don't mind paying a little more if that can be sorted, but then again I'm not struggling financially.

The paradox is, of course, that those specialty new media outlets do almost only that, are even narrower echo chambers, and its hard for them to be self-defeating when they won pretty comprehensively, no?

Well, they won -- and now the rubber will meet the road, but of course for every mistake or bad thing that happens, Republicans will be excused and Democrats will be blamed by those same entities, despite the fact that they have zero control at the Federal level now, and those who believed the lies in the first place will continue to believe them. None of those new media folks will act objectively (and includes those few of the left). And the cognitive dissonance will get even more ear-deafening. The death of legacy media is an awful thing (I have written a lot about how important professional reporters and editors are, often lost on Brits given their legacy media set is quite different from the US, in a world where it costs nothing to build a platform and anyone has access to a bully pulpit regardless of their lack of understanding of the topic on which they offer a view).

It's sad to sit here and think that the only way this changes is that the GOP fucks everything up and the nation enters a steep economic and/or social decline, steep enough that those who believed the lies stop believing them. The only hope is that others feel miserable.

Still think The Rock should run in 2028 as an independent :) The nation needs someone apart from and above the fray.

Dems so far behind on platforms like Twitch,Kick and TikTok. You think you can convince a load of gamer types to vote Dems if you're waffling about trans rights or Palestine? Republicans had some of the biggest streamers on their side.
Right wing platforms make at least 10 times more than the Left ones too.

I have stated before that all leading politicians are lying cunts. I'm not sure it's even possible to be truthful in those positions, people don't like the truth because it's often bad.
Humans have pretty darn good survival instincts which includes denial. It's one of the reasons why we tend to be selfish..

Our biggest strength will probably be the death of us.

You could start by calling that cess pit what it is. ‘Alternative news source’ is bollocks. That’s a billy smarts lineup.
That group of utter cunts is the echo chamber for the right. Responsible for what is to come. You seem to be part of it.
