US Presidential Race 2016

Is the Republican party so fucked up that all they can offer is the prospect of a Cruz or Trump presidency. There must be a normal candidate in there somewhere.
Although a Clinton or Sanders victory would be infinitely preferable to either of them, I fear that Sanders would only win the East and West coasts with the Republicans winning the rest and the world would be stuck in a nightmare until Trump/Cruz get impeached, which they undoubtedly would.
The lesser evil is Clinton.

In an ideal world you are right and after he won the republicans would realise the error of their ways a national health service would be formed, the US would make peace in the Middle East and a utopia would reign. I can see the appeal I really can.
but.... What will happen is the democratic machine will take over and with little organisation and 13 primaries he will get beaten in 11 of 13 after 1 shock win and then exit having done what he always intended to do namely getting his ideas on the national agenda and having moved Hilary to the left.

Meanwhile one establishment republican Kasich, Bush or Rubio will be left standing to take on Trump or Cruz.

Another question is does Trump actually want to be president ?

I told tolmie a few days ago that Christie had 0 chance and he just dropped out. I said bet on Bernie and he destroyed in NH, both obvious statements but true nonetheless. I concede that Bernie is still the underdog. What you are saying is true. She is still the favorite and what he's saying is very 'utopiaesque'. The best thing for me, like you mentioned, is that he is pulling her more to the left. It basically comes down to what you are saying, the democratic machine, or what I'm saying, the 'revolution'. I'd take my side (the price). Step by step Bernie has done what has needed to be done. Let's see how these next few steps play out. The tough part is continuing these steps. I'm betting on the Internet. It's a massive step for America. I think, and myself included, the people will completely give up on the process if Bernie loses.

Sanders/Clinton debate on CNN 02:00 Sat morning UK if anyone is interested.
Edit: It was last night

Nate Silvers 538 site is calling it 50:50 for Nevada and you can still get Bernie at +250. He's making major strides in SC. He's closed the gap to within 7 points nationally. By most accounts he won the debate last night. From what I'm reading this stupid super delegate bullshit will get straightened out if he continues his surge.

Getting dirty on the republican side.

Some of the insults make you wonder if they'll have the same fit of pique if they are commander and chief over another 9/11 castrophe.

Haha. Your last line, I've been thinking this since day 1. It's like he's trying to say the most outlandish thing to take himself out of the race but it's backfiring and the public are lapping it up. I think he was only in it for some self promoting and a bit of an ego boost. Fucking terrifying to think he could win.

I've also suspected that this is all a joke that has gone too far. He seriously underestimated the stupidity of republican voters and can't do anything to clue them in that it is a joke.

Scalia death is a huge boost for Clinton, before that she may have had an issue getting minority and young votes out. However the chance to vote for a liberal justice on immigration, on women's rights on citizens United etc will give a chance for a lot of groups that may not have been out in force to now vote in much bigger numbers.

I don't think he can win an election, he has no party support base, he polls terribly among non whites and women, evangelicals hate him and he only has his own money, even Murdoch Hated him. Even if some of those groups fall behind him, ultimately it will be half arsed and not with any passion or organisagion. A candidate for angry white males only won't win. Likewise Cruz can't win and is even less popular than Trump (the next Goldwater) amongst the establishment - even possible a couple of high profile republicans would go Clinton over Cruz.

So the republicans need bush Kasich and Rubio to become one candidate very very quickly and all fall together, even then nothing to say they can beat trump unless everyone unites against him and it's hard to see Cruz doing anything that is not about him , himself or him. But even if they get a single establishment candidate they still need to placate Trump and not go too hard as even worse than Trump winning is him deciding to go independent and stand anyway, if he took even 10% of republican votes away they are toast .

Dems can just sit back and enjoy!

Imagine trump wins; every electoral add in places like Florida (Miami Dade) would be him calling all Mexicans robbers and rapists and talking about kicking them out and building a wall!

If Sanders can't win Nevada it is hard to see any path to the nomination. It is a state he had to have a chance in and he had all the money and momentum. I suspect the beginning of the end for the Dems nomination. The only risk now is if there's an indictment and Biden has to come in late
