US Tariff War

He's now pedalled back on a third set of tariffs. This one being the removal of the de minimis exemption - low value items mainly from Shein and Temu - he has re-instated the exemption "temporarily". Mainly, it sounds like it was just a logistical nightmare and they had millions of parcels piling up in customs.

Pair this rowing back of pretty much all of his significant tariff orders, and judges pausing EO's like his repeal of birthright citizenship, the firing of USAID employees - basically he floods the zone with a load of headline-making assertions that never actually get put into force. He is totally inert when it comes to actually making laws because none of it is going through Congress. The only things he can get to stick are things that were already within the President's purview, which thankfully is limited. He's not the king he thinks he is, and people need to keep making that point.

Musk might be a whole other ball game.

Was just about to post the same re grabbing headlines. A bit of playing to the gallery and being seen to get things done and probably some distraction tactics ar work too.
It wouldn't surprise me if he rows back on the US boots on the ground in gaza soon - a neat trick in that 'just' letting the idf do as it wishes will then seem like some sort of benevolent compromise.

People have said it before but Trump has this habit of being most heavily influenced by the last person he spoke to - it's a weird form of recency bias or lack of political object permanence. He has a chat with Netanyahu and suddenly he thinks the US should get boots on the ground in Gaza. Next he'll speak to MBS and other gulf states and row back on that, and instead he'll be talking about investing into LIV golf courses.

It was much the same in his first term but he seems to have even less of a filter this time round.

There is no way in my mind US in Gaza ever happens, there is too much objection to it from within his own ranks.

No no this can’t be right. Someone said earlier in the Trump they admire Trump as he gets stuff done that he says he would.

You must be mistaken.

Surely that would be a positive thing if the goal was to actually stop people buying this tat? Buying fast fashion, and then having to wait for 6 to 8 weeks for it to clear customs would probably stop people buying it more than the extra 20% on the price.

I've gotta be honest, this is one policy I agree with him on. Why should a couple of foreign companies be allowed to avoid a tax that you're charging all of your domestic suppliers, and then use that to undercut them? If it's uneconomical to check every package, then set the tariffs at a level that it becomes economical.

Anyway, China have hit back and I was particular amused by Calvin Klein being labelled as an 'unreliable entity' after the sleeves of my jumper recently stretched to about 6 inches longer than my arms after just a few wears. Fuck Calvin Klein.

We can all try to wrap it in some kind of economic context, but that’s a big smokescreen.

It’s ALL about BULLYING OTHERS BECAUSE HE THINKS HE’S THE BIGGEST AND BADDEST PRICK ON THE PLAYGROUND…and someone told him that in the previous Gilded Age, when globalism and transportation of goods wasn’t as seamless as it is in 2025, America managed to make money without Federal Income Taxes, which is his wet dream.

He is an idiot and a **** with it.

You mean like Amazon, Apple etc do over here, he wants us to back off taxing Google and his billionaire mates firms for favorable tariffs.

I’m not making a value judgment on whether the de minimis exception should exist. I agree that it’s the one tariff that has some kind of meritorious reason for being implemented. I’m certainly no defender of cheap tat being imported from across the world at massive environmental cost.

My point is simply that any decent government would have done an impact assessment and put in place some kind of provision such that the policies they’re implementing have a chance of being successful. It didn’t take a logistics expert to figure out that there would be this huge increase in administrative burden at the ports.

By ruling through executive orders he’s just throwing poorly thought through stuff out there which he’s then having to repeal. It’s just all pretty pointless exhibitionism.

Well yeah. People often ask for a definition of 'populism,' claiming that it's just things that are popular that you disagree with. But I think this is a typical example. Populism is easy solutions to complex problems that haven't been thought through and are based on a simplistic understanding of how anything works. And that sums up Trump to a tee. He thinks that the presidency comes with a magic pen where he can sign something and it will happen.

Things happen but not the things they want to happen like them getting rid of their overseas aid department, they
have just invited China to extend it's influence across the world sure they will save some money but the long term costs will be huge

If it's going to cost $80 billion to remediate Gaza, it would take a lot of golf rounds and sun beds to recoup that.
