US Tariff War

Mexico get a benefit that is reduction on Tariffs because they're deploying 10,000 armed forces to the border to help with the fight against emigration to the USA.

Great when a politician says he'll do something and then has the audacity to actually take action.... guess we're just not used to politicians delivering on promises... even though we may disagree, though the majority of the US don't. That's democracy for yer.
So the 10000 troops deployed in 2019 when he was cry arsing are going back on deployment after they left 4 years ago and seeing as most of the fentanyl is smuggled in by air or sea, this only benefits Mexico in realiity.

Seems she has played the stupid ballbags game, called his bluff and got what she needed, he of course will claim how strong he is, but what exactly has he achieved?

much much more than either the Labour or Conservative administrations have done in this country regarding immigration.

Really sticks in the craw when someone actually does something mainly when they take actions to which you disapprove eh?

It comes in on cars and tractor trailers, 95% of it, at official border crossings and points of entry and almost all of that by U.S. Citizens or foreigners legally entitled to cross and recross the border.

How many of our illegals would you like the U.K. to take? We can do you 15,000,000 easy. 20,000,000 if you prefer.

Yeah I know them stats, I mean any illegally brought in normally isn't on the border, so all this is pointless

Does Trump only like tarrifs because they generate money at federal level (which he has control over and can divvy up how he wants) rather than taxes that he doesn't have as much control over, or does that not make sense?

Not surprised by what's happened. Two leaders who are heavily invested in stocks tank the pre-market by 10% then an hour after the bell it's hovering a percent. The only ones who would have suffered were the consumers. I don't trust Trump one bit but Trudeau is as a bigger liar as Trump.

Some people got bloody rich this morning.

US customs must be criminally incompetent then.

Almost all Fentanyl smuggled into the US is across the southern border, by land, at official ports of entry, hidden in cars and 18-wheelers, and by U.S. Citizens. Chinese criminals supply the pre-cursors to Mexican cartels who manufacture the stuff and then ship it north, across the southern border. The cartels with agents on the American-side are experts at finding naive and / or broke people to act as couriers. Only about 8% of cars crossing the border are checked for drugs. Only 5% of 18 wheelers / container trucks but if they stopped all of them trade between Mexico and the U.S. would grind to a halt. I know back in 2020 I think they inspected a trailer full of vegetables in Arizona and found enough drugs to kill 60 million people. There was another bust last year of a trailer with enough fentanyl to kill everyone in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. It's fucking ridiculous.

You'd have to inspect every single car and every truck. How is that even possible? Last year, more than 112,000 Americans died from overdoses—the largest number of annual drug fatalities in history. If 100,000 civilians died from enemy action we'd declare war but here we are.

If you mean across the southern border by foreign individuals carrying it in back-packs and sneaking in in remote areas or tunnels or swimming across the Rio Grande outside of official border points you're right, the quantity is so small it barely registers.

I mean there is a simple solution, don’t take that shit, same with cocaine and any other illegal drug, if there isn’t a market then it won’t be there, go and see if all these fuckers voting at closing the borders will be happy when they can’t get a line for a Friday night. Christ some of the guys making these decisions are the biggest users, but I suppose diplomatic bags can be used for that.

It's a huge border with many check points. The volume of people, cars and trucks crossing back and forth every month is beyond manageable. I just checked an article in the New Republic from 2023 and in July alone of that year an estimated 16.5 million pedestrians, passenger vehicles, and cargo trucks crossed the southern border.

The above link is official US government numbers. It's staggering. Scroll down a bit for the Mexico numbers.

It worked though. It seems that beneath all the bluster Mexico and the US have reached a mutually beneficial compromise. Doesn't look as hopeful with Canada, but the markets seem to be steadying for now at least.
You nor me nor anyone else knows if it worked or not.

He could change his mind tomorrow. Or the next day. That’s my entire point. He sowed chaos without concern for consequence. It’s what he does.

I’m sitting here at a conference spending time with a dozen companies all impacted by tariffs as so many are. How do they plan for a wild card? You can’t. It’s a colossal waste of brainpower. Volatility is the enemy of prosperity unless your job is to bet on vol.

This is like me kicking you in the nuts, and then after the pain wears off, me saying “See? I healed you. You feel better now, right?”

Trump has backed down on tariffs on Canada now too. Hard to see what he's got out of it, Trudeau just repeated the same $1.3Bn border initiative they announced months ago... oh wait this is new... Canada has now announced the appointment of a "Fentanyl Czar" (yes you read that correctly).

What a truly earth-shattering concession. Totally worth it. No doubt his base are celebrating it like some monumental victory - despite the fact he has just succeeded in making Canada and Mexico realise that they need to diversify their trade relationships.

Trudeau probably schooled the thick **** into thinking the Czar role is a bigly thing.

I haven't ever come across Canadians as riled up as this.......something I think Trump has underestimated.

I just hope Prince Trudeau has the backbone to see it through. I know a lot of the people might not like him, but they support him on this.
