Using portable wifi hotspots on your laptop.

We currently have no internet in our flat due to it being renewed, I've got a portable wifi hotspot but I've used all of my free data already.
If I use my laptop through my phone hotspot having no free data will this cost a bomb?

How big was the allowance that ran out and how quickly did it run out?

Only 500mbs and it ran out yesterday.

Not when did it run out but how quickly? Is it your monthly allowance and it has ran out on the 26th so you have used 500mb in 26 days? or did you top up at midday yesterday 500mb and in no time you had used it all?

If you use 500mb in 26 days I would imagine it will cost you about a £5 for another 500mb which will last you until your next months free allowance comes into effect.

Virgin basic tarrif ?.

If it is Virgin do not mind tethering as it is, use pdanet+
Virgin just cut your speed after data allowance afaik, no further charges.

It's on the 16th, however I've only just started using my laptop through hotspot. I was wondering what the standard charges are for using it?

No one can answer this. It depends on your provider and the tariff you're on. Ring them up and ask them. But to put it into context, data limited broadband tends to be 20-30GB per month for your home connection, so if you are using mobile to temporarily replace it until your connection is back, you need to be sparing in your use. And that means no streaming of your daily p0rn fix, or you'll burn through 500 MB data pretty quickly.

Unlimited data and tethering is about £10 a month from most providers isn't it?
