USS Doris Miller

Is the name of the latest Ford Class aircraft carrier commissioned by the US Navy.
Up until now most US nuclear powered carriers have been named after US Presidents or military commanders.
Doris Miller is the 1st enlisted man and also Black American to have a carrier named after him.
He became famous as the first black man to win the Navy Medal after shooting at Japanese planes and rescuing fellow sailors during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

He was not trained to use military weapons as at that point in time black soldiers and sailors were segregated from white personnel and were only allowed to do non military duties.
His character is portrayed by Cuba Gooding Jnr. in the movie "Pearl Harbor".
Today was chosen for the naming ceremony as it is Martin Luther King Day in the USA.

Apparently his mother was convinced that she would give birth to a girl so decided on the name Doris. And refused to change the name when she gave birth to a boy.
He was usually known as Dorie.
Didn't Johnny Cash have the same idea with A Boy Named Sue! !!!
