Var debate 2019/20

Inept refereeing is the top cause still. Whether that be on the pitch or in Stockley Park. Someone said at the weekend the refereeing association need to admit they make mistakes before they can move forward. If used right, VAR can actually be a good tool to weed out the weaker referees'.

I think I still stand by opinion that it's getting more decisisons correct, the fact it's involved already shows there was a lot missed. Not saying it's perfect but it's got capability to be better. Our penalty miss for example. Encroachment would never have been given last season, but it ruled in favour this term.

Dead right about them not admitting mistakes. The var is afraid or instructed not to overrule the ref as it would show him fallable, which is the whole fucking point of having a video referee!

It shows that even though we have seen numerous fuck ups already this season, the refs association try to explain why it wasn’t a mistake instead of just putting their hands up and learning from it. The whole thing is a shambles.

Mike Riley should be sacked. His implementation and interpretation of var are completely inept. I take it he oversees this? It needs the media to stand up and call it out for what it is. They let the refs and their apologists make excuses and blame it on teething trouble when it’s abundantly clear that the referees don’t have a clue what they are doing or are just corrupt.

Completely get your point, good luck with the media bit though.

I think you've misunderstood. One match was as VAR, one as ref.

Spurs match:
Ref; Michael Oliver
VAR: Graham Scott

Newcastle/Watford:
Ref: Graham Scott
VAR: Craig Pawson

I don't have a problem in the on-field ref missing the ricochet off the arm - without checking, he might have been blocked, and it happened quickly.
VAR on the other hand...
Perhaps I did misunderstand but my point refers to var and not refs.
The FA appointed Riley so presumably they appointed the person who oversees var.
Var has the time and purpose of correcting things missed by the ref so "missing" something that is obvious during playback smacks of incompetence or policy with my money on policy.

In desperately striving to avoid the embarrassment, controversy & damaged-faith of over-ruling the match referee ...

... they seem to have overlooked all the embarrassment, controversy & damaged-faith of everyone knowing that the VAR guy has watched an obviously wrong decision from every angle in slow motion, and opted to do nothing about it.

It would be a bit like the police developing a brilliant new forensics method, which proved that the accused didn't do it ... but then not wanting to mention this because the original detective thought he probably *was* guilty (as a snap decision, from where he was stood, before he saw the forensics).

Is it as simple as only using the forensic, pedantic examination for City goals but using common sense for all other situations?

No. FFS how can you have watched the last month of football and come away with that opinion? Have you not seen the massive VAR controversies involving just about half the teams in the league and every other game?

Riley is definitely useless.

Swarbrick appears to be Head of VAR Implementation, which was why he was out and about on radio after the Spurs match. Some here think he didn't make much sense though!
