While strange, the linesman put his flag up. He misread things, but just as in any season previously, play does not stop when the flag goes up. Never has. It isn't common for the ref to overrule, but sometimes they've seen something the linesman hasn't.
The IFAB regs in the Laws of the Game may have some PL tweak somewhere else, but (as far as I can tell) say flagging should only be delayed for "very clear goalscoring opportunity". I don't think 40 yards out with defenders in the way would be one, so if the linesman thought it was offside, he should and did put the flag up.
If the players had tried to defend it, it might not have mattered. What the keeper was doing is anybody's guess.
Managers and players where told pre season that the flag would not go up and that VAR would rule if a goal scored.
The flag went up, the players stopped as they have done all their playing careers.
We now have an offside rule that says the flag might go up, it might not, the ref might blow to stop the game, he might not, teams might be given the advantage of playing on, others might not, that could lead to a goal being scored, it wont for those that get stopped and on and on and on...............
Its so fucking ridiculous, its so open to manipulation dependant on who is playing its untrue, its a farce!
