VAR Discussion Thread | 2024/25

not at all, its much better for the game.

easy to have nostalgic memories of the game before VAR and think everyone could accept a refs mistake, they couldn't - it was ruining the game.

the ones that said VAR would destroy the game and fans would stop going were the ones to far gone.
It hasn’t totally ruined the game, but it’s definitely changed how much we enjoy it. Like, offside called because a tiny toenail was offside? That’s not how offside was meant to work! The whole point was to stop "goal hanging”
For a lot of fans, VAR was the final nail in the coffin, and they just couldn’t bring themselves to go to games anymore.

Thats one of the worst decisions we've seen. Can't wait for Webb to justify how that meets the 'high bar' or whatever the fuck it's called now.

It's not difficult. VAR is supposed to be for obvious mistakes. Instead, what we get in the Premier League is clangers being ignored and incredibly harsh calls being made. It's totally arse backwards logic.

Fucking disgraceful decision again ..Var is a fucking joke..but along will come the spammer and defend it to the hilt.
Var needs fucking off asap..it ruins football for the match going fans.
Yes I know Var didn't disallow the goal but it made ref go to the monitor and that's the fucking problem..
Yeah, it's the consistency, ie Oscar Bobb v Spurs wasn't even looked at !
Fuckin hate corruption, rags v Fulham/Grimsby got THREE crucial decisions in their favour .

The one v Bobb was definitely more of a foul..the Fulham lad had no intent of landing on Chavs players foot..it was just a natural turn and tbh where the fuck else could he put his foot..it's football not fucking ballet..
By the way I'm agreeing with you mate..

So you accidentally stand on another players foot when going for the ball it’s a foul
Unless your Fernandes and then the foul is given the opposite way. Identical incident last season results in a penalty to the rags after Fernandes lands on Konsa's foot.

You can see the video of it (if you can stomach it) on page 10 of the PL games thread.

Much better for the game?? Oh do fuck off it’s the ultimate tool to manipulate outcomes. It’s not levelled the playing field it’s destroyed it. How can professional football have it in some games and not others? That inconsistency alone shows what a farce it is

6 ex pros and ex referee, Mike Dean, adamant that’s not a foul, so why does Salisbury think it is and how does he persuade Jones that it is?
Fulham absolutely shafted 2 weeks running.
They’re not giving that if it’s at Burnley, either.

I'm not sure which part of Law 12 that movement contravenes?

"A direct free kick is awarded if a player commits any of the following offences against an opponent in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:
  • charges
  • jumps at
  • kicks or attempts to kick
  • pushes
  • strikes or attempts to strike (including head-butt)
  • tackles or challenges
  • trips or attempts to trip"

VAR could intervene and relegate West Ham for having too many bubbles on the pitch and he'd wank the referees off, he's too far gone

The answer is. None.

Only one game in and it’s ruined a game. That hammer is scrambling at home trying to find a way to defend it

VAR is dictating the outcome of games. I'll stop short of manipulation, but it's certainly making watching games very unenjoyable.

A selective review of selective passages of play, some reviewed within an inch of their lives and others ignored completely, with seemingly different criteria then applied to each decision not just in each game, but in the same passage of play by the same referee and VAR officials. Is this just stupidity, a lack of communication, or something more sinister?

Fulham must be fuming. Second week in a row they've been stuffed by VAR. I hope they call it out as a club because it isn't good enough. Not only is the enjoyment of the game as a spectacle being eroded, they're getting some big decisions wrong game after game. And by wrong I don't mean wrong with blue tinted city specs, just genuinely and absolutely wrong in the eyes of most who have ever watched or played the game.

Correct.

Remember that Foden goal a few years ago, against Liverpool iirc, that was disallowed by VAR and Taylor for a foul on the halfway line in the build-up for contact at an intensity that had been allowed, quite reasonably, by Taylor all through the match?

It's that sort of thing that does people's heads in.
