VAR Discussion Thread | 2024/25

Feet of both players are well behind the line in the obscured part of the image only and equal amount of each player's sleeve and the arm of the Burnley player are in the offside zone Its level and not offside, this needs an explanation from the corrupt PiGMOL
Don't get me wrong, I agree with you. I was trying to put their 'explanation ' forward and I was trying to say they even their explanation is wrong.
Ive read what the Fulham manager has said, basically their goal was ruled out for a foul in the build up and yet for the penalty awarded against them, there were 3 against Fulham.
This is ignoring the fact that for their goal there was no foul.

Var is not doing what it was brought in to do, end controversial refereeing mistakes or errors.

Celebrating my 40th !
Can’t be arsed explaining every bad VAR call. They’ll always happen, I’ve always said it.
Happy birthday

I doubt you have enough hours in your day to explain every bad VAR call two absolute howlers yesterday the Burnely offside with the much trumpeted new tech and the Fulham disallowed goal for a "careless tackle"

Careless is when a player shows a lack of attention or consideration when making a challenge or acts without precaution

Like they said on MoTD he was turning with the ball

Just seen the Fulham disallowed, terrible decision , idiot ref to see that on the monitor and deem it a foul.

The game has been changed beyond repair. Some of the decisions yesterday are so so bad. The announcements, the running over to the screen, it’s turned into some kind of shite tv show with the most predictable ending.

The people at the top are not football people and don’t understand the roots of the game, they are destroying the game.

After that fa cup final when the palace goalie handballed it outside his box and var thought it was fine, that for me when I thought get rid it’s not fit for purpose!
It took you that long !
What about the match a few years ago, I can't remember who against but Sterling was flattened by the keeper (away to a London team ?)
The commentator immediately said it was a penalty. He described how Stetling was taken out and then to his total suprise and the watching millions, play went on, no foul.
It is week in, week out. Nothing changes.

That’s one of the worst decisions ever in football in my opinion, they had the technology infront of them and still couldn’t get it right, although I’m of the thinking they didn’t want to send him off as it was against City ..

That decision showed the world, in the centrepiece game of the English football season, that the rules are irrelevant.
The only thing that matters when it comes to refereeing decisions is the entertainment of the neutrals and wishes of the pundits.
They showed everyone that football is no longer a competitive sport, it's a sporting entertainment industry.

As mentioned by a few previously, until we get what they have in rugby the officials communicating with each other over a decision on field ( TMO)with the fans and those watching on tv if it’s broadcast live able to hear clearly what’s happening nothing will change, and the clear manipulation of games will continue. Then again why would they want to implement this when VAR has given them the control of fixing outcomes in games when desired.

Here is a question for those who know the rules better than I do.

Where is the holding offence committed? Where the attacking player is at the time, or where the defender's hand is at the time?

If it's the latter, I only saw the penalty offence briefly and the United player is definitely in the box, which is why he fell over of course, but was the defender inside the box, was his hand that was holding the shirt in the box before he let go?

I hate to have to analyse these things so closely, but when VAR overrules a referee they should be sure they got it right. They have to be 100% sure the offence was in the box before they give it, presumably the same as balls out of play when a goal is scored. Those of you who have seen more angles, was the defender's hand that was holding the shirt actually inside the box before he let go?
Yeah but was he dragged back with 'full force' or was it just a tug without enough 'force' a la the rags game last week?

if it doesnt fix the game per say it certainly helps it on its way

He was told to disallow the goal, as he was to give the penalty.

Nope, he wasn’t, he was told to go and have a second look. Which I don’t mind.
The refs have the choice, with even better view, vast majority of time they get it correct. Ones like that are infuriating. But I’m resigned to the fact it will happen time to time.

Doubt that Fulham are re-assured with that.

They probably expected far more from a system supposedly there to avoid such things.

And do you actually know what he was told by the VAR official ? I suspect you are making an assumption ?

And a penalty to Palace if it had been Ederson .

I go back years and Webb was commentating on one of the decisions in one of our matches.

Basically said that while technically it was a foul, and in the penalty area it was a courageous decision by the ref not to give it.

If I did my job half as bad as him I would have been sacked years ago.

Agree . There's something deeply ironic/ symbolic about the referee , previously the absolute authority on the pitch , being sent like a naughty schoolboy to a TV screen to be coached by a shadowy off stage expert as to what he has missed. TV is the Emperor . He might as well kowtow to it . In theory it makes sense but in practice it takes a huge amount of courage to stick to an original decision. Especially at certain grounds .
